This fascinating book by John Smith describes in words and pictures the history of the Methodist Church in Pickering from the preaching of John Wesley in Willowgate to the present day.

I'm getting asked quite regularly about the history of the Chapel - I think the building work is prompting people to think about the past as well as the future!
For those who want to know more, there's a great resource available in the shape of a booklet called "A History of Methodism in Pickering" by John Smith, a local historian and member of our church.
You can read the booklet on our website:
http://pickeringmethodistchurch.co.uk/a-history-of-methodism-in-pickering/
Hope you enjoy it. In particular please have a good look at the photograph taken outside the Chapel in the early 1900s on page 12 and attached to this post. It's a long shot but If you - or someone you know - can name anyone in that photo please let me know at [email protected] the next page there's a great photo of a chapel outing taken in 1913. Please share this post with anyone who you think might recognise someone in the picture. It would be wonderful if we could trace a few of the descendants and invite them to the official opening of the new building.

Wouldn't it be great to try to trace descendants of some of the people in this photo? As you can see it was taken outside the Chapel in, we think, 1905. It would be wonderful to try to tell the stories of some of these folk - who they were, what they did, and what happened to their families.

Then, to celebrate the completion of our redevelopment project, we could take a picture from exactly the same spot of the current congregation with the descendants of those from 1905 and invite them to the opening.

I'm planning to talk to and our own historian John Smith about the idea. I'll get some publicity going in the press etc over winter.

In the meantime, if you double-click on the photo it'll open full size. Believe it or not, the photo is of such high quality that you can use "zoom" to get quite sharp close-ups of the people in the photo. Is there anyone there from your family perhaps? Please let me have your views on the idea and share with others in the town to see if they can help.

The photo is also on the "Photo gallery" page of our website www.pickeringmethodistchurch.co.uk/?page_id=3477
