Throwback Thursday - The Local Essential Oil Industry.

Local surgeons Dr William Holland and Dr William Page became dissatisfied with the quality of medicinal essential oils and decided in 1829 to go into partnership with a Peterborough botanist, Dr Fenwick Skrimshire to produce high quality peppermint and lavender oil.

The rich soil of the Fens were the perfect environment for growing peppermint and lavender plants and as there was no piped water they used very pure, underground springs to power the process.

Dr Holland's son took over when he died. He expanded the business which achieved international renown and employed large numbers of people especially at harvest time. They diversified into botanical drugs, laudanum, hemlock, cannabis and o***m which was used to treat malaria.

The business closed in the early 20th century. Dr Holland's house is now a care home and Dr Page's house is the Laurels, reminders of a lost industry.

Throwback Thursday - The Chelsea Flower Show

The Royal Horticultural Society held flower shows from 1833 in its garden in Chiswick moving in 1863 due to low attendance to RHS gardens in Kensington where it became known as the Great Spring Show.

After 26 years they decided to move it to the heart of London to Temple Gardens whose known history goes back to 1307 and the time of the Knights Templar. Famous for its roses the garden is mentioned by Shakespeare in Henry VI Part 1.

The Great Spring Show was cancelled for a large International Horticultural Exhibition in 1912 which was held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. It proved such a successful site that the Great Spring Show opened there in 1913 and has remained there ever since and the Chelsea Flower Show was born.

It was cancelled for two World Wars, in WWll the site was required by the War Office as an anti-aircraft site but it resumed despite a lack of plant stocks and a shortage of fuel in 1947.

We usually try to keep Throwback Thursday local and relatable but as I am standing in a medieval chapel at Haddon Hall in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales I thought I'd share it with you.

The medieval Catholic, St Nicholas chapel was originally the village church but the village was wiped out by the plague and the chapel became part of the hall's estate. It was extended in the early 1400's and decorated with beautiful murals on limewashed walls. During the reign of Henry VIII and his Protestant conversion the paintings were covered over.

In the 1900's the 9th Duke of Rutland, John, Henry, Montague Manners with his love of architecture and history made restoring Haddon Hall his life's work and working alongside the restorers saved as much of the wall art as possible.

The stained glass window was installed in 1427 but fell into disrepair during a period when the house was unoccupied. A grant allowed it to be completely dismantled and sent to London during COVID where it was cleaned and re-leaded and re-assembled in the chapel just as the COVID restrictions were lifted. The Hall is still owned by the Manners family.
