Hertford College Chapel

Hertford College Chapel The Chapel of Hertford College. One of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Welcome to Hertford College, and welcome to the College Chapel!

The Chapel is always open for members of the College to sit quietly and pray. Members of the public are welcome to most services, and may visit whenever Hertford College advertises that we are open for visitors. The Chapel has a wonderful acoustic that is increasingly popular for recordings. You will often find a lot of music in the Chapel: services, lunchtime recitals, concerts, or just people pr

actising with the beautiful pipe organ, the piano or other musical instrument. The Chapel services are according to the rites of the Church of England (with one Roman Catholic Mass each term). However, the Chapel has always welcomed people of all faiths and none to attend and participate in its life. Some come for the music, to sing in the choir, or simply to sit back and enjoy some fine singing. Some come to soak up the spiritual atmosphere, to provide a stillness of heart and mind, or ‘to recharge the batteries’. There are as many reasons as there are people who come. At the front of the Chapel is a place for lighting candles as symbols of your prayer. At the back of Chapel, in the Antechapel, is a board for writing prayer requests, and a space to remember loved ones we have lost. The main services of the week are
• Sunday Evensong (5.45 pm) with full choir. Most Sundays have guest preachers drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds of faith and life experience. Evensong is followed by drinks and formal hall
• Thursday evening Sung Eucharist (6 pm) with a smaller choir, followed by free supper
• Tuesday night Compline (9 pm) with unaccompanied plainsong by candlelight
