To mark the 80th anniversary of the deaths of Hans and Sophie Scholl, we shall be watching the film 'Sophie Scholl: The Final Days' (2005) at Grandpont House. There will be a buffet dinner provided at 19:00, and the film will start at 19:45.
Before the film, there will be a short introduction by Dr Paul Shrimpton, author of 'Conscience before Conformity: Hans and Sophie Scholl and the White Rose Resistance in N**i Germany' (2018, Gracewing), a study of the cultural and religious background of the White Rose students which brings out the influence of Newman and others on their thought. Dr Shrimpton is a teacher at Magdalen College School, and an historian of education; he has also completed a critical edition of Newman's Dublin university papers (published posthumously in 1896): 'My Campaign in Ireland, Part I' (2021). His critical edition of 'My Campaign in Ireland, Part II' appeared in 2022 along with a festschrift for the great Newman scholar Ian Ker, entitled 'Lead Kindly Light: Essays for Ian Ker'.
Please RSVP to Dr Shrimption at [email protected] if you would like dinner beforehand, for £5.
