They’re coming back! That’s right – our travelling trees have been touring homes, schools and community settings in Cowley, staying with different hosts for the last three weeks.

The tradition mimics the Mexican Posada, which re-enacts Mary and Jospeh’s search for somewhere to stay in Bethlehem. They will officially return to the carol service at St James Church on Sunday at 4.30pm with a chance to learn about our festival charities SeeSaw
and ROSY - and there’ll be readings, carols, mulled wine and mince pies.

How are your tree decorating skills? Why not join us on Thursday 11 December, any time between 3pm to 6pm for Tea, Cake and Decorate at St James Church, Beauchamp Lane, Cowley.

We’ll be decorating our big tree and making the church look festive with smaller trees from schools, local groups and businesses. Our Cowley Christmas Festival raises funds for Oxfordshire children’s charities SeeSaw Grief Support and Respite for Oxfordshire's Sick Youngsters (ROSY).

Plans to lower the flag
Back in 2015, I was interviewed for the role of Rector of Cowley. Those present heard me say: “I can give you 10 or 11 years”. I can’t believe how quickly that decade has passed. These have been some of the most exciting years of my life. I have seen God’s Spirit burn with increasing intensity in some places. In others, challenges have been faced and conquered. In parish life there is always a tension of celebration and sadness as friends change their address to one with a heavenly postcode. Heaven is so much richer for their arrival. These have been years where friendships have grown, and oceans have been sailed. Each day has held its own joys and opportunities. As I back away you will not hear me say ‘I’m glad I no longer do that”. No, I believe everything we do has value. There has not been a day when I have not experienced that truth. Everything is worth the investment we have made and continue to make. Being part of Cowley and Cowley Parish continues to be a wonder and delight. The people of Cowley are great pilgrims to journey with. But next summer, our flag is going to be lowered, and our mooring shifted to one with a Cambridge postcode. Mary and I are going to retire. In the meantime, we will have work to do, preparations to make and some great times to be enjoyed. Do please hold July the 18th as a ‘save the date’. It is likely to be our last weekend!
May God bless each one of you

Time is running out to volunteer to host a Joy of Christmas travelling tree and be part of a
tradition that dates back to the Mexican ritual of Posada, re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s
search for lodgings in Bethlehem and sharing the Joy of Christmas around Cowley.
They’ll be commissioned and sent out from St Francis Church, Hollow Way on Advent Sunday,
30 November and welcomed back to the Cowley Parish carol service at St James Church,
Beauchamp Lane on Sunday 21 December.
