St Michael at the North Gate Church is one of the four original gate churches, which were situated at the four entries to the City of Oxford. As the only Gate Church still in opperation as a parish church, we were made the City Church in the 1970s. Our civic role means St Michael's plays an important part in the life of the city. We host annual civic services, and you can see where the Mayor place
s his Mace when he worships with us. The church is originally medieval, and our Saxon Tower the oldest building in the city. The rest of the church building dates from several different eras, and has been restored at various times. The church has a number of items of historical inerest, including our pulpit, at which John Wesley preached, and our font, at which William Shakespeare stood (though it was then in a different church). We feel a key part of our mission is to provide a space for private prayer, every day, in the heart of this busy city. All are welcome to attend our services, online or in person. Join us online:
