The good news is that since Jerry from Devon Swift Project visited us last week, we've not found this little bird stuck in the tower again. Even better news is that this morning we spotted swifts entering two of our next boxes, both on the west face of the tower. Once the nesting season is over, we plan to install a nest box camera for next year.

Come and enjoy a bacon bap with John Coke this Saturday morning (13th) at the Welcome Cafe in the Dorset Aisle. Delicious home-made cakes too, served from 9.30am to 11.30am. A great way to start the weekend. And if you've not ventured inside this Medieval grade 1 listed building before, it's a great excuse to come and have a look around.

A part of one of our bells is being repaired at the moment so we can't play the famous Ottery Song, which usually rings out every four hours. As soon as the part has come back from being repaired, we'll get it going again. Pictured is the Carillon, a rare, historically significant clockwork mechanism housed in the bell tower, which plays the tune. The melody was composed by Bernard Lord Coleridge and publicly performed for the first time in December 1910.

Our swift boxes are definitely attracting the attention of swifts, which is great, but we’ve had one very persistent bird that keeps managing to get inside the tower, not into a box. We have rescued it three times ourselves from the south tower stairwell. This week, Jerry from Devon Swift Project came to try and find out where it might be gaining access. They only need a 30mm gap to squeeze through. He found it inside again and here it is in the picture, on its way to being safely released outside. Jerry thinks he’s filled all the potential gaps in the bell chamber where it could have been getting in, although we will keep monitoring for the time being. Just for the next few days, we will have the quarter hourly clock chimes turned off as this makes it easier and safer for someone to climb around inside the bell chamber to make those checks.

Moira, Bishop of Crediton, visited the church as part of her Living Stones Tour of Devon churches, and met with Geoff and Carys to find out more about our Under One Roof project. The aim is not only to repair our roof but to share the heritage and history of the building in new ways,
