You lucky, lucky people!
St Mary’s Church, Ottery St Mary
Sometimes I wonder if we know how lucky we are having one of the most beautiful and important parish churches in England on our doorstep!
St Mary’s church is a stunningly gorgeous piece of architecture standing guard on its position overlooking Ottery St Mary and surrounding areas. It’s a place of importance for thousands of people, for regular service attenders, for those wishing to arrange weddings, baptisms and funerals, for those who attend the many social events hosted there and for the multitude of tourists whose visits provide a much-needed cash injection for local shops and businesses.
The up-keep and maintenance of the church is, obviously, costly and time-consuming which is why our ‘friends of the church’ organisation exists.
The Friends of the Church of Ottery St Mary organise various fund-raising social functions during the year in order to assist with the maintenance and improvement of the church including the kitchen, fabrics, fittings, cleaning, ornaments and the churchyard. The ‘friends’ also actively recruit members for a small membership fee (10 pounds a year), all of which helps with the above.
