Throwback Thursday.

This time last year we highlighted a St Michael's picture by John Piper coming up for auction in New York. We wrote:

1964 Lithograph entitled "Llan-y-Blodwell" for sale by auction. Artist: John Piper CH (13 December 1903 – 28 June 1992). Piper was a war artist, best known for his depiction of bomb damaged Coventry Cathedral. Together with Patrick Reyntiens, he also designed the Crown of Glass lantern in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. His work is held by galleries worldwide including, in Britain, the Tate, the Hepworth, the Imperial War Museum and the Ashmolean.
For sale by auction on 12th June at the Showplace Antique Center, New York. Est $200 - 400. Local pick up only.

There was a time when, if you wanted a prominent pew on a Sunday, you paid. If, on the other hand you'd rather use you shillings or pennies on other things then there were free pews - at the very back.

Whilst the tower of St Michael's dates from 1855/56, the barn in the picture and the cottage are both some 200 years older, dating from the mid 17th Century. The barn is attached to the Horseshoe Inn and the cottage was the former Blacksmiths.

No B&Q in those days. If you wanted a hinge for your church back door it was off to the local blacksmith.

A reminder that a year ago this week we went contactless!

We wrote:

We're going contactless! Visitors to St Michael's are able to make carry out transactions with contactless payment. A card reader near the church entrance allows payment for books and events as well as donations - even when no one else is present. You don't need cash, just bring your card or phone.
