A quieter practice night this Thursday, as we used the simulator to bring our two training bells into a full ring of ten. It made for a different kind of session, but a really productive one. And a big thank‑you to Chloe for her wonderful videography as she joins us in developing the St Oswald’s website

🔔 A project months in the making! 🔔

Our new training bells have now been installed in the church tower, marking an exciting step forward for our ringing community.

Collecting and installing them was no small task. Each bell weighs around 3 cwt (hundredweight) and had to be brought into the tower in sections before being carefully lifted into the clock room. The floor has also been strengthened to support the new installation, thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the guidance of the Diocese Bell Adviser.

These training bells will provide a wonderful opportunity for new and existing ringers to learn and practise, helping to preserve the tradition of church bell ringing for future generations.

We look forward to celebrating their official opening on St Oswald's Patronal Festival, Sundat 2nd August, and giving thanks to everyone whose hard work has made this project possible.

Oswestry is proud to begin its journey as a new ART training hub, and proud to have our training bells. Jacob, age 7 and the son of one of our ringers, tried ringing for the first time today and did wonderfully. Moments like this remind us how important it is to nurture the next generation who will keep this centuries‑old tradition ringing into the future.

🛎️ Oswestry Bellringers – Summer Update
Progress on Our New Training Bells
The past few weeks have been full of excitement for the Oswestry Bellringers. After unavoidable manufacturing delays, we were finally able to collect the new training bells that will soon accompany our existing ring of eight.
Peter Woollam generously offered to drive down to Holcombe in Somerset, with me as passenger, to bring the bells home in his trailer. Each bell weighs around 3 cwt, but can thankfully be dismantled into three parts, making the journey and unloading far more manageable.
On our return, three willing volunteers met us at the tower to help lift the bell components into the clock room. Following guidance from the Diocesan Bell Advisor, we also began strengthening the clock room floor. Five 10‑foot lengths of 3" x 3" oak beams were ordered from North Shropshire Timber to support this work. Construction began in early June, and we aim to have the strengthening completed — and the training bells fully operational — by the end of the month.
We look forward to celebrating their official opening on St Oswald’s Day, 3rd August.

🏆 Competition Success!
Breaking News: Oswestry entered two mixed‑ability teams into the Shropshire Association Striking Competition. Twelve teams from across the county took part, each performing a five‑minute test piece judged blind by an experienced adjudicator.
We are thrilled to announce that Oswestry won the Call Change Cup and placed second overall — a fantastic achievement for all involved

Thank you to Matthew Higby for providing the new training bells. Brian and Peter collected them and even enjoyed a quick ring on the mini‑ring while they were there. Once back in Oswestry, the rest of the team — John, Andrew and Chris — joined in to help move the bells up to the clock room.
They’ll be installed shortly, giving our new ringers the chance to develop excellent bell‑handling skills as we begin an exciting new chapter in training.

🎉 Celebrating 100 Years of the SACBR! 🎉
What an incredible evening marking a century of the Shropshire Association of Church Bell Ringers. It was wonderful to see 102 members come together, along with special guests from neighbouring associations, to honour our shared heritage of ringing.
A special mention to our ringing master Tony, whose dedication continues to inspire us all.
This celebration was lovingly organised by a sub‑committee led by Ann E Williams, who sadly passed before seeing the event come to life. Her spirit and commitment were felt throughout the evening, and we are grateful for all she gave to the association.
Thank you to everyone who attended and made it such an enjoyable and memorable night. We are also deeply grateful to Hawkstone Hotel for the beautiful room, delicious food, and wonderfully friendly staff — you helped make the night truly special.

Well done to all the brilliant organisations that have benefited from the Veolia grants — including our wonderful band of bell ringers in Oswestry. A fantastic boost for so many community groups


Community groups across Shropshire have received grants totalling £13,000 as part of Veolia and Shropshire Council’s popular annual Envirogrant scheme.

🌳 The scheme offers money to projects which benefit the local community or the environment.
