Happy St Georgeās Day. We fly the flag of St George at Oldham Parish Church, not as a symbol of exclusion, but of hope, courage, and welcome.
St George himself was not English. He came from what we now know as Palestine, a reminder that the roots of our faith and our story are beautifully diverse. His life has come to symbolise standing up to injustice, protecting the vulnerable, and choosing courage over fear.
As a Church of England community, we hold onto these deeper values. We celebrate St George not as a figure who belongs to one nation or one people, but as a sign that Godās love and liberation are for all.
Thatās why we also commit ourselves to welcoming the stranger, standing alongside refugees, and recognising the dignity of every person, whatever their race, gender, sexuality, age, ability, background, or story.
The cross of St George is not just a national emblem; it can also be a sign of hospitality, justice, and belonging.
*All* are welcome here.
