Last week, one of the people we supported was a pensioner in her 70s with just 59p left until the weekend. Her energy company had been increasing her payments, and this week her pension simply didn't stretch far enough.

This is what hunger in Oldham looks like: a fixed income and rising bills that stop adding up, even for people managing carefully.

This August, 473 vouchers meant 974 people in Oldham didn't go without a meal. 349 of them were children.

Nobody chooses for their child to go hungry. What they don't get to choose is a food shop that costs more every month while wages and benefits don't keep pace.

"I was upset at having to be referred for a food parcel, but everyone treated me so well."

That's what a mum told us on Friday, ringing just to say thank you. She'd worked for years before her health meant she could no longer continue, and she said that from the first phone call to the moment her food arrived, she felt treated with care, not judgement.

Big thanks to Collister Ltd for donating a set of really good stackable chairs. Our old ones had seen better days, with stains that told their own story! 😬

The new ones are already in place in our volunteer rest area and meeting room, giving the team a proper upgrade for their downtime. We will be sending a certificate of thanks to Collister. Really grateful for a business that looks after us behind the scenes 💚

Grace is 16, just left Saddleworth School, and starts college in September. For the past six years, every single Easter and Christmas, she has collected for us. 100 Easter eggs. 100 selection boxes. Every year, without fail.

Last week she was given a £50 voucher from High Peak Comps Community to donate to a local foodbank of her choice. She picked us, filled a trolley, and dropped it all off today.

"I received my parcel this morning & wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart, honestly you have made my day, in fact my whole year, not just 4 the food but the sweetest kind gesture was a ball for my dog, he's running round like it's Christmas again, tail wagging carrying his new ball... I found this kindness absolutely overwhelming and lovely."

One of our clients sent us this today.

We always try to stock pet food, because no one should have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their dog or cat. This time one of our volunteers had also picked up a spare ball for the parcel.

We delivered to someone last week who'd just been discharged from hospital after treatment for a long-term health condition that means he's no longer able to work. While he was in hospital, he'd missed an appointment, and it meant his benefits payments stopped.

He had nothing to fall back on while it got sorted out. That's exactly what we're here for, a bridge when things go wrong at the worst possible time.

We're looking for a volunteer bookkeeper.

Every donation, every fundraiser, every Gift Aid claim, someone has to keep track of it properly. That's the job. One morning or afternoon a week is all we're asking for.

Ideally you'll have finance or accounting experience and know your way around Sage. In return we can't offer much beyond biscuits and a decent brew, but we can offer good company and a role that actually matters.

Last night the food bank manager went along to Saddleworth Male Voice Choir's rehearsal to thank them in person for choosing Oldham Foodbank as their charity of the year, and to walk the choir through exactly where their support will go. He came away genuinely blown away by the voices.

Their support will fund emergency parcels through tin collections at rehearsals, keep shelves stocked through bucket collections at concerts, and this year includes a concert held entirely in aid of the food bank, with everything raised going straight to local families.

We're very grateful to have been chosen, and we'll be sharing how their support is helping local families throughout the year ahead.

We got this message after a delivery this week.

A Mum told us the food parcel meant more than we probably realise, and that it had taken real pressure off during a tough week. That's what this actually does when it lands right: it buys someone a few days of not having to worry.

We hear versions of this often. It's the reason the work carries on.
