These became especially popular among soldiers in the trenches of World War I, particularly in France. They provided a sense of divine protection amid the horrors of mechanized warfare
Genuine soldier-made ones from real casings
examples from WWI France are shaped like a bullet cartridge. Some twist open to reveal a small statuette inside (commonly the Virgin Mary). Others were made by hollowing out actual spent cartridge cases to hold religious icons.
They are miniature shrines or reliquaries designed to fit in a pocket usually carried in the chest pocket
