Throughout the year there are various festivals that are recognised and celebrated by the major world religions. This week sees the end of the month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid ul Fitr for Muslims.

Eid ul Fitr - Islam
Week Commencing – 11/6/18
Actual Date – On or around 15th June 2018

Eid ul Fitr is a festival that marks the end of the month of Ramadan. The first Eid was celebrated in 624 CE by the Prophet Muhammad with his friends and relatives after the victory of the battle of Jang-e-Badar. Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking Allah for the help and strength given to them throughout the previous month.

The festival begins when the first sight of the new moon is seen in the sky. Muslims in most countries rely on news of an official sighting, rather than looking at the sky themselves. There are special services out of doors and in Mosques, processions through the streets, and of course, a special celebratory meal - eaten during daytime, the first daytime meal Muslims will have had in a month. Eid ul Fitr is also a time of forgiveness and making amends.

To recognise Eid ul Fitr, the chaplaincy team will be inviting students to reflect on what they are thankful for. They will also have an opportunity to learn more about the Islamic faith.

Holocaust Memorial Day
Week Commencing: 22/01/18
Actual date: 27/01/18

Holocaust Memorial Day is an annual event that recognises and remembers the people who have died or whose lives were changed forever because of the Holocaust. It takes place on 27th January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest N**i concentration camp. By the end of the Holocaust, at least six million Jewish men, women and children had died in ghettos, mass-shootings and concentration camps. Holocaust Memorial Day isn’t just about remembering the holocaust during the Second World War, it is also about remembering all genocides that have taken place and hoping for an end to racial violence.

“First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me”

A poem written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller about the rise of persecution in N**i Germany.

To recognise Holocaust Memorial Day, there will be a reflective activity in each of the Prayer and Contemplation Rooms across our campuses. These rooms are available to anyone at any time and can be accessed via swiping your ID onto the lock. If your ID isn’t activated for Prayer and Contemplation Rooms please visit any reception to have them activated. There will also be similar reflective activities in the social areas.

Throughout the year there are various festivals that are recognised and celebrated by the major world religions. This week is the Christian festival of Epiphany.

Epiphany - Christianity
Week Commencing - 8/1/17
Actual date of festival - 6/1/17

Epiphany is a Christian festival celebrated just after Christmas. In the East, where it originated, the Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. It also celebrates Jesus' birth.

In the West, Epiphany is associated with the journey and visit of the magi (Wise Men) to the infant Jesus. According to the gospel of Matthew, the magi followed a star from the east to worship Jesus as King of the Jews. Upon meeting Jesus they ‘bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.’ (Matthew 2:11)

For many Protestant church traditions, the season of Epiphany extends from 6 January until Ash Wednesday, which begins the season of Lent leading to Easter.

To recognise this festival, the chaplaincy team will be inviting students to reflect on what journey they are currently on and giving out a free Epiphany gift.

In the run up to Christmas, we will be hosting some Carol Services across our campuses. The details are as follows;

· SLC – Thursday 14th December at 12:15pm in the main atrium
· Nuneaton – Monday 18th December at 12:15pm in the Refectory
· Hinckley – Thursday 21st December at 10:30am in the Atrium

All of the services will last roughly 30 minutes and will feature some traditional carols and a mini sermonette with a twist! These are informal services and we tend to invite people to come and ‘mingle’ rather than providing formal seating. All are welcome and words will be provided on service sheets upon arrival. Any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Chaplaincy.

Throughout the year there are various festivals that are recognised and celebrated by the major world religions. Next week, Hindus will be celebrating Dussera, the 10th day of Navaratri.

Dussera- Hinduism
Week Commencing - 25/09/17
Actual Date – 30/09/17

The tenth day of the Hindu festival of Navaratri is called Dussera (or Dusserha), and marks the triumph of good over evil, and also the motherhood of God. Durga Puja is particularly important for Hindus in Bengal. After having worshipped Durga for nine days, her image is taken to the streets in a procession and there is much celebration and dancing. To mark Durga leaving her mother after the nine day visit, her image is cast into water.

In northern parts of India, Hindus also celebrate Rama's victory over Ravana during this time. The ten days represent the ten heads of Ravana, and each day is used by Hindus to get rid of bad characteristics, such as lust and jealousy. The tenth day is known as the Day of Victory.
