St Mary the Virgin, Astley In the 11th century a Saxon noble called Alsi owned Estleia which became Astley. Sunday service 3.30pm and visits from 2.30pm. Sunday services start at 3.30pm.

The Collegiate Church was built by Sir Thomas Astley in 1343 and dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, who owned and lived in nearby Astley Castl

e. Once the size of a Cathedral and about 185 feet in length, the Church now stands one fifth of its former size, and today still holds many historic treasures. Astley has links to medieval royalty with Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York and Lady Jane Grey. The Grey family also once owned Astley Castle. In this Century, it is the congregation and friends of Astley Church who maintain and care for this wonderful historic church building and they would like to share all this with you. Not only to visit this Church, but also for regular worship. Visitors are welcome prior to the church service from 2.30pm (Easter Sunday earlier service time). Please see our church website for all events and church service times. Astley Church also has links to the writer George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) whose parents were married inside the Church in 1813. A copy of the marriage certificate is on display. Astley Church is Knebley Church in her book "Scenes of Clerical Life". Our Astley open weekend is nearly here. Come and find out more about Astley Blacksmiths and books for sale inside the Church. Reading Room refreshments all weekend and jigsaw puzzles on Sat 12th Sept. Sunday 13th Sept Evensong service at 3.30pm. Everyone very welcome and we look forward to seeing you 🥰

Astley School on a snowy morning nestled under the watchful eye of our church.
For many years until it's closure in 1972 the school at Christmas time was a magical place. Us pupils looked forward to the day we were allowed to go up to the church to see the Christmas tree and the crib. Excited and looking forward to attending the Carols By Candlelight service which is still held to this day.
We made decorations to put on our own trees at home and on the last day were treated to a great party with games, food and best of all homemade lemonade.

Did you know that Astley Church today is one fifth of its former size? Photos taken from inside the tower bell ringing room showing the still remaining stone arches which once led to the original Nave and Transepts. It once was 185 feet long and Transepts 60 feet North and South. Still a very impressive building with so many clues..
