St Mary the Virgin, Astley

St Mary the Virgin, Astley The 11th century a Saxon noble called Alsi owned Estleia which became Astley. Sunday service 3.30pm and visits from 2.30pm. Sunday services start at 3.30pm.

Please help keep our special church open by visiting our Just Giving page. https://www.justgiving.com/stmary-astleypcc The first mention of a church at Astley is in 1285 when Stephen Astley was appointed incumbent of the Parish Church by Edith Astley. The Collegiate Church was built by Sir Thomas Astley in 1343 and dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, who owned and lived in nearby Astley Castle. Once

the size of a Cathedral and about 185 feet in length, the Church now stands one fifth of its former size, and today still holds many historic treasures. Astley has links to medieval royalty with Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York and Lady Jane Grey. The Grey family also once owned Astley Castle. In this Century, it is the congregation and friends of Astley Church who maintain and care for this wonderful historic church building and they would like to share all this with you. Not only to visit this Church, but also for regular worship. Visitors are welcome prior to the church service from 2.30pm (Easter Sunday earlier service time). Please see our church website for all events and church service times. Astley Church also has links to the writer George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) whose parents were married inside the Church in 1813. A copy of the marriage certificate is on display. Astley Church is Knebley Church in her book "Scenes of Clerical Life". You can help by liking our page and if you can by visiting us on one (or more) of our open days - you won't be disappointed. Funds are always needed to keep the church open and we have a Just Giving page St Mary the Virgin Astley if you feel you could help us. https://justgiving.com/stmary-astleypcc
