Congregational Sunday, which this year takes place on 7th June, is the the day we celebrate, and give thanks for our Congregational traditions; remembering our Congregational ancestors, giving thanks for our current Congregational freedoms and looking forward to our future.
However you celebrate and reflect on your Congregational roots, you may like to include this prayer in your service:
Dear loving, heavenly Father,
On Congregational Sunday, we bring to our minds and into your presence our prayers for those who have been part of our tradition in the past, belong today and will be in the future.
Lord, we pray for those women and men who felt called to follow you in new and radical ways in the 16th and 17th centuries. We thank you for those who felt the call of your Spirit to worship in ways that were free, who wanted to follow a more congregational way and who stood up to the authorities, facing penalties and punishment to go where they heard you calling. We praise you for their strength and courage in all they did.
We give thanks for our own Congregational church, here in (add your location) for the years we have been light and salt in this community and for all those who have been part of this fellowship over the years. We pray too for other Congregational churches who will be joining together today and for their work and witness wherever they may be. Lord, we ask that there will be a revival in our churches so that your name will be known more widely and all will come to know of your wonderful love for them.
We thank you Lord that we can still worship in spirit and truth and that we can, through seeking the mind of Christ together at our church meeting, learn more of your plan for us as we look to continue to love and serve you in this place.
We pray that you will continue to guide and inspire us so that as we travel into the future, we will always have you at our centre and will always seek to do your will in all we do.
In Jesus' name we offer our prayers. Amen.
