Phoebe was a Deacon. She oversaw the care of the poor, sick, and orphans. Deacons were also known for preaching and teaching. Phoebe delivered Paul’s Letter to the Romans. As a trusted messenger, she would have been expected to read it aloud, answer questions, and explain its meaning. Phoebe was the first theologian to grapple with Romans! God has always entrusted vital work to faithful women as well as men. Leadership is not about gender or status but integrity and trustworthiness. Women like Phoebe have always played essential roles in shaping, carrying, and proclaiming the gospel.

Priscilla and Aquila were church planters, mentors, and teachers. When Apollos — an eloquent and gifted preacher — arrives with gaps in his understanding, Priscilla teaches him “the way of God more accurately.” Notably, her name often appears before her husband’s, signalling her importance. Priscilla’s story reminds us that teaching, preaching, and shaping doctrine are not male-only callings. God equips women with wisdom, insight, and authority to strengthen His church.
