As I was walking to our Church Building this morning an acorn fell from a tree and landed on my head. It's a bit early in the year for acorns, but the weather is throwing nature into a bit of a tizz. Unlike Chicken-Licken, no I didn't think the sky was falling in, but recent images on the news have made me think about the end of the world.
Long before anyone thought about global warming, the Prophet Isaiah spoke the words of God and said;
...a curse consumes the earth;
its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,
and very few are left.
The new wine dries up and the vine withers; (Isaiah 24:6-7).

The Bible Book we tend to turn to when considering 'the apocalypse' is Revelation. Here, speaking as if those days had already happened, God says;
A third of the earth was burned up,
a third of the trees were burned up,
and all the green grass was burned up. (Revelation 8:7).

As we watch the news and see fires out of control across large areas of the world (not just France and Spain) we can easily imagine that such a time is approaching.

Recognising the signs and pointing them out is not meant to cause alarm, rather an encouragement to people to be ready. As Isaiah wrote, there is a need for repentance. Each person needs an individual repentance - a recognition of sin, seeking forgiveness, turning away from sin and confessing that Jesus died in our place to pay for our sin - in order to be ready for the day of judgment.

So, as you see fires burning, don't be afraid of the fires, but let it remind you that an end is coming. Be ready.

"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
"Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28)
