Padmaloka - Buddhist Retreat Centre

Padmaloka - Buddhist Retreat Centre Padmaloka specialises in Buddhist training retreats for men.

17/05/2026

Thousands of men have come through Padmaloka in its lifetime, chanting together in the shrine room, studying in the various rooms and developing lasting connections. Padmaloka has been a crucible of transformation and a realm of friendship for many.

This retreat is an opportunity to dwell in an emerging vision of Sangha, to hear the challenges overcome in creating the Padmaloka we know, to glimpse what may lie ahead for it, and to dwell on the great truths that inspire its continual renewal.

We’ll hear talks by Prajnamanas, Lokesvara, Sona and Suvajra on the theme of ‘Buddhism for Today and Tomorrow’, as well as input from Padmavajra and others.

We’ll also be doing a series of special rituals for Padmaloka’s abundance and vitality.

Join us on this unique event to celebrate the Lotus Realm.

After many entreaties, Master Padmasambhava is invited to Tibet. He is a long-time coming, converting the gods of the mountains and lakes. When eventually he meets the king of Tibet in Lhasa, there is a great confrontation between a powerful worldly king of Tibet and Padmasambhava – the King of the Dharma.

Which king do you serve? A worldly king, or a king of the Dharma?

Book on this weekend retreat, open to all men interested in Triratna Buddhism

Today is the launch of the first of the Padmaloka online column: The Stambha!

The Stambha will aim to include a handwritten article of around a 7 minute read, some photographs from life here in the community, designs or artwork, and a video or two. It will also include signposts for upcoming events categorised into Open, Going for Refuge and Order rereats that correspond with comittment to the Triratna Buddhist Order. this will be posted on or around the 1st of every month. This will mainly be undertaken by myself, Sebastion, the Guestmaster at Padmaloka, although other members of the community will be able to add to the platform if they wish.

Previously we have done this using social media, which seems crucial to many charities and businesses, due to its convenience and volume of users. Though Padmaloka is in a unique position in the movement, a position that currently allows it the flexibility to try out a different method of communication, one that will allow for higher quality, more thought-out and slower pace of content.

Over these four days, we’ll have the opportunity to dive into exploring a profound aspect of the Dharma. The retreat will centre on the radical shift described by Sangharaksh*ta as: moving from our usual experience of subject–object dualism, ‘me in here’ and ‘the world out there’, towards the direct realisation of One Mind (cittamatra). This is the possibility of an awareness that is open, unified, and free.

"The experience of the one mind is like a great expanse of water, absolutely pure, absolutely transparent, with nothing in it, not a single speck, other than the water itself." Sangharaksh*ta

What does it mean to turn around in the deepest seat of consciousness?

This is what we will be exploring on our extended four-night under 35's retreat.

14th - 18th May.

Padmasambhava was the great Ta***ic master of his age. A substantial part of his training was spent in the eight great cremation grounds, the places where the dead are brought. There amidst the funerary pyres, the lakes of decay, the jackals and other beasts, Padmasambhava encounters the celestial maidens – the dakinis – and receives esoteric initiations to bring about complete transformation.

This will be a weekend evoking the mystery, wonder, and challenge of the Dharma life – where will you find the cremation ground? And will you survive it?

There is a discount for booking on more than one Great Gathering, please use the discount code under each rate on the form and apply them to each Great Gathering you book onto

On this day, we will celebrate Padmaloka’s 50 years of life and perform rituals to dedicate the next 50 years.

We’d like you, your friends and as many people as possible to join us and create a potent atmosphere of devotion, friendship and blessing, from which Padmaloka can continue to serve the movement and the teachings of the Buddha.

All adults who practise within Triratna are welcome, so please share this event with all your friends and book your place via the website to avoid missing out.

Don't forget to bring an offering, less than 3cm in width for a special ritual.
