Today we give thanks for St Richard of Chichester. Mass is at 12 noon at St John the Baptist, Timberhill: you're always welcome to join us. Born in 1197, Richard worked hard for his yeoman father, later studying at Oxford and Paris and in Bologna as an ecclesiastical lawyer. On returning to England in 1235, he was made Chancellor of Oxford and eventually Chancellor to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Edmund of Abingdon. Following Ordination, he served for a time as a parish priest and then became Bishop of Chichester. He was seen as a model diocesan bishop: progressing around his diocese on foot, visiting and caring for the people, being accessible to all, reforming the clergy, assisting the poor and promoting the dignity of the Mass. He died in April 1253, considered a living saint, and following his canonisation his mortal remains were translated to Chichester 750 years ago today, 16 June 1276. We offer today's Mass particularly for our bishops.
