After nearly a century as the parish church of the Catholic community in Norwich it became the mother church of the new diocese of East Anglia in 1976. It now takes its place with its ‘elder sister’, the Anglican cathedral which is located in the centre of the city. Norwich is one of the few English cities to have two cathedrals and, over the last 30 years, we have grown closer in a spiritual and practical partnership. As well as being a beautiful building St John’s is a place of prayer that is open every day to all who come in search of peace and tranquillity. It is also the home of a large parish community.

✨ Did you know? ✨

Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Here are a few facts about this beautiful feast:

🤍 It is one of the oldest feasts dedicated to Our Lady, with Christians celebrating Mary's Assumption for well over 1,500 years.

⛪ Early Christians venerated Mary's tomb in Jerusalem. Tradition tells us that when it was opened, it was found empty, leading the apostles to believe that Mary had been assumed into heaven.

🌿 The Church teaches that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.

📜 In 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly defined the Assumption as a dogma of the Catholic Church in Munificentissimus Deus.

✨ The Assumption reminds us that heaven is our true home and fills us with hope in the promise of the Resurrection and eternal life with Christ.

As we celebrate this joyful solemnity, may we follow Mary's example of faith, humility, and trust in God.

Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, pray for us. 💙

With the weather again over 30 degrees today and tomorrow, our kitchen will not be offering hot food.

But, there will be plenty of tea, coffee, iced coffee, and cold drinks, as well as cakes, salads and sandwiches.

Unfortunately the kitchen is a difficult space and we struggle to keep it cool. Not cooking helps us to keep the temperature down just a little bit. We don't take these decisions lightly, but we have to consider the welfare of our staff.
