Benny Hill’s final resting place lies in Hollybrook Cemetery in Southampton, and it has become something of a pilgrimage site for fans, with many visiting each year to pay their respects to the comic legend. Although precise visitor numbers are difficult to verify, his grave is widely known and cherished among admirers, appearing frequently in fan‑toured videos of the cemetery, suggesting a steady stream of pilgrims rather than a trickle. What surprises a number of people is the name etched on his tomb: rather than “Benny Hill,” the inscription reads Alfred Hawthorne Hill, his birth name. Born under that name, he took “Benny” as a stage name — a homage to Jack Benny — and spent decades performing under it.
The grave’s history is not without drama. At one point grave‑robbers attempted to break into his coffin, prompted by rumours that he had been buried with jewellery or even gold. In response, his coffin was reburied and sealed beneath a thick concrete slab, a measure taken to prevent further disturbance. Despite that, fans still gather, leaving trinkets or small tokens, and often remark on how surprisingly modest the headstone is — a fitting tribute to a man known for his frugal, private life despite his huge fame.
What makes the site especially poignant is the contrast between his playful public persona and the quiet simplicity of his real identity, as revealed in the name on his grave. Visiting his grave offers a moment of reflection: not just on the slapstick antics and soaring popularity of the “Benny Hill Show,” but also on the humble man behind the laughter, Alfred Hill, who remains fondly remembered long after his passing.
