The black goo came up from her feet and out of her mouth

Sam Storms told this story, “In 975 my wife and I had been married for three years. My wife had arranged a time for us to go out to dinner and then we were going to spend the night in a hotel. So we had a wonderful dinner and then I did something incredibly stupid and insensitive (although I didn’t know about it for the next 17 years). We walked into the hotel room and I sat down and turned on the television and watched a baseball game.

My wife did not react well to that. It hurt her so deeply that I would care about watching a baseball game and care so little about her on our wedding anniversary. However she didn’t say anything to me about it. But from that day forward, for the next 17 or 18 years, she would get up every day and hear a voice in her head which would say, ‘Sam hasn’t made you happy. You can’t trust God. You come with me and I’ll make you happy’ and she would see a finger beckoning her. She wasn’t as theologically sophisticated as she is now and she believed this and she didn’t know that it was a demon. She heard that voice every day and started having perverted nightmares and dreams. She was also tempted to leave me and run away.

Years later we were at a conference and the person leading it said, ‘I think God wants to minister to people who have a fear of failing him. If that’s you, would you please stand up.’ My wife stood up (I remember thinking, ‘What are you standing up for? You’re a pastor’s wife. You’re fine.’ But tears started running down her face and some women gathered around her and pray over her.

After it was all over, I asked her what happened. She told me, ‘All I know is that I felt this massive gob of black goo come up from my feet, travel all the way up through my chest and it came out my mouth. For the first time in 18 years I feel clean.’ At the time we didn’t necessarily put it together with it being a demonic spirit that she had opened the door to way back on that fateful night in 1975. But the next morning we were driving to the airport. (My wife was going home while I was staying on at the conference for a few more days). As we drove, I asked her, ‘Can you tell me what happened last night?’ She replied, ‘I don’t really know. All I can say is that I felt clean for the very first time.’ Then she suddenly said, ‘It’s gone!’ I asked her, ‘What’s gone?’ She replied, ‘That voice! That voice that I’ve heard every day for the last 18 years! It’s gone!’ It was shocking to say the least.

Then she got nervous and said, ‘I’m afraid that it’s going to be waiting for me back home.’ I asked what she meant. ‘What’s going to be waiting for you?’ She replied, ‘That demon that has been tormenting me for 18 years.’ So she went home and was in the house with our teenage daughter, Melanie. Our daughter was just a strait-laced teenage girl who didn’t know anything about spiritual warfare. They were both upstairs packing. Melanie went downstairs. She was standing in front of a wardrobe and there was a mirror in the door. In the mirror Melanie saw a man sitting on a seat about ten feet behind her. She turned and looked at the man. He was wearing a winter coat and had a scarf around his neck. (This was in the middle of July in Oklahoma). The man looked at her and then beckoned her towards her with his finger. Fortunately Melanie had had the wisdom to turn and run upstairs.

When my wife and I heard this story from Melanie we realised what had happened. This demonic spirit which had tormented my wife Anne for 18 years was trying to go to the firstborn in our family. When my wife asked her, ‘Oh, was it an angel?’ Melanie replied, ‘No Mom. It was evil!’

That was a whole series of events that awakened us to the reality of the demonic and spiritual warfare. So whenever I go to conferences or churches and they want me to talk on the subject of spiritual warfare, I tell them this story. I cannot count the number of women that I have seen weeping as I tell that story or who come up afterwards and tell me, ‘You described my life and I’m terrified to tell my husband about it.’ The ministry of seeing them gain freedom from it is absolutely wonderful.”

Sam Storms told this story while being interviewed on “The Exorcist Files” podcast episode entitled “A Storm Warning: Dr Sam Storms on Spiritual Warfare and the Gifts of the Spirit.” The interview can be watched at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEf1ABCydlM&list=PL_YVJXylbWsyRkH0-G04E61LtIFS1gpEK

Recovering the routine ministry, given by Jesus to His disciples, of casting out evil spirits

Bishop Graham Dow wrote, “The word occult means ‘hidden’. Occult practices, in general, seek knowledge through hidden powers either to find guidance, bring about healing or curse another person. At its most serious level, any past or present involvement in practices claiming to worship or serve the devil will certainly indicate the presence of evil spirits. Considerable psychological disorder is also likely.

It is important to note when a person shows an attraction to occult practices such as witchcraft, spiritualism, fortunetelling and horoscopes, or to occult books, or shows an attraction to those who practice these things, this probably indicates the presence of evil spirits. Darkness seeks out darkness.

The presence of occult spirits is indicated also by superhuman strength or ability, or by inexplicable knowledge other than that which clearly glorifies God. Such knowledge is often called ‘second sight’. This is sometimes a difficult area to discern since occult experiences of knowledge are counterfeit opposites of true words of knowledge from the Holy Spirit.

Occult practices are common in some societies. Writing as a Scot myself, I have become aware, through in-depth prayer ministry, that some with Scottish ancestry may need deliverance from the residual power of clan warfare and its atrocities in past generations. My suspicion is that most so-called ‘second sight’ indicates more serious evil in previous generations, such as curses with violence. Although the evil practice of the past may have since been discarded, its power may not have been fully broken. This is another example of the way that evil spiritual power can travel through the generations until it is dealt with. ‘Second sight’ is a kind of residual of spiritual power. I have met people who were born with powers of foreknowledge that they never sought and yet that they felt gave them power over others.

Some people view psychic powers as morally neutral, capable of being used for good or evil. The use of the word psychic in this context is unfortunate because, according to the Bible, the psyche, or soul, is a good and created aspect of our humanity. Through the psyche, we have the ability to share in human relationships and open ourselves to God. The word psychic as it is used today, however, concerns itself with hidden spiritual powers which are likely the work of evil spirits, unless they are clearly operating in obedience to Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit.

Some occult activities such as Ouija boards are commonly considered harmless, but it is foolish to play the devil's games, even for fun. Just as those who come to church for a ‘laugh’ may be touched by the Spirit of God. Conversely it can be so with activities that call upon spiritual powers that are not of God.

Once, a woman came to see me who had committed her life to Christ many years earlier but who had never had any sense of God's presence. I realized that something was blocking the Holy Spirit's ministry to her. The clue came when she shared that her father was of dogmatic religious opinions but also was hooked on horror films. In the name of Jesus, I released her from the bo***ge she had inherited from her father and from whatever evil or occult practice lay behind it in previous generations. The presence of God came to her within minutes of this prayer.

This example shows the need to recover the routine ministry, given by Jesus to His disciples, of casting out spirits. Inherited spirits should be dealt with whenever a person becomes a Christian.”

Bishop Graham Dow told this story in his book entitled “Deliverance” (Chosen Books, 2004).

Healed of cancer and successfully pregnant

Father Mathias Thelen of Encounter Ministries told this story, ”I’ll never forget one of the first times I saw someone healed. A couple came into my office for a wedding preparation meeting. At every such meeting I will say to the couple, ‘Do you want children?’ Usually the answer is, ‘Yes’ and then I ask ‘How many children do you want?’

But this time the couple’s faces fell. I asked them, ‘What’s wrong?’ The woman replied, ‘I have cancer and I’m not able to have children.’ She then explained that she was going to have surgery to remove some of her reproductive organs. She was very sad and I felt really terrible for the couple.

So we went through the rest of the wedding preparation meeting and right before they left I said, ‘Hey, I’m sorry to hear that you have cancer but I believe that God could heal you. Could we pray? God might heal you. I don’t know if he’s going to, but can we just pray?’ The couple agreed.

It was a very simple prayer. I just put my hand on her head and I began by praying, ‘Come Holy Spirit.’ The woman felt heat happen in her abdomen when I prayed. It was only a three minute prayer but she said she felt something occur. I told her to let me know what happened.

A couple of weeks later I got a voicemail. It was that woman who was on the phone. She was just screaming down the phone with excitement. She had just returned from a hospital appointment and told me, ‘Oh my goodness! They did a scan and there’s nothing there! There’s no tumour! They can’t find it anywhere!’ She was just going nuts on the phone.

I was saying, ‘Wow’. It was just a simple three minute prayer. Today, she has children, multiple children and all because I said, ‘I believe God heals. I’m not saying you’re going to to be healed but I’m going to pray and see if he wants to heal you.’

One of the things we discover is that God wants to heal more often but this requires us to actually step out in faith and represent him. A lot of times when someone is sick we just say, ‘I’ll pray for you.’ How about that instead of praying for them after you go home, you pray with them right there and then, laying your hands on them as you do? That’s what Jesus says to do in scripture. When we do that, we find that God does things.

One of the fascinating things about the story I’ve just told you is this. About a year later I was talking to one of the woman’s friends and she told me that the woman didn’t go to church, even though she received a miracle in her body that the doctors can’t explain and she has children today that she wouldn’t otherwise have had without being healed. It’s not up to us to judge people’s hearts. That’s for God to do. But something was missing. She took what Jesus offered her but she didn’t receive Jesus himself. We can have everything in this world but, if we do not have him, we have nothing.”

Father Mathias Thelen told this story during a Healing Service on 6 December 2024 which was broadcast live on the Encounter Ministries website at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrqm3yhzrZ8&t=7534s

The Catholic Approach To Decommissioning Tattoos

Whether tattoos are a spiritual entry points for the demonic is a controversial topic in Christian circles. Many churches prefer to avoid the subject, given the proliferation of tattoos in current Western cultures. One church which is more forthright than many on this subject is the Catholic Church. This is particular true of the exorcists in that denomination.

Monsignor Stephen Rossetti wrote this: “When the Deacon poured the holy water on her tattoo, she howled, ‘It's burning me!’ The water was actually cold. Again and again, he poured holy water on the tattoo as I repeatedly read the prayer of ‘Decommissioning Tattoos.’ After months of deliverance prayers, including exorcizing this tattoo, it was finally over. The tattoo is now benign and the demons connected to it are gone.

Surprisingly, it is just a tattoo of some roses, but it became a huge demonic portal, and a major focus of the exorcism. It was connected to her past as a stripper and carried s*xual overtones. With the help of her parents, she found her way out of the clubs into a regular job, and into the confessional.

At one point, some of Satan's minions had targeted her and were trying to entice her back into the clubs and/or force her into the s*x trade. Several of them had tattoos of demons on their bodies, including Baphomet and Aka Manah (a demon of sensual desire). Thankfully, her parents again came to her rescue and protected her.

People ask me what I think of tattoos. I don't recommend them. With a demonic tattoo, the person has bonded the self to the demonic entity. Even if the image does not depict something evil, if it is connected to sinful behaviors, as with this young woman, it can be a big problem. Moreover, some parlors have been known to curse the ink or inscribe magic symbols inside the images.”

Another Catholic exorcist, Father Chad Ripperger, said this: “Lev 19;28 says ‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.’ If you look at the theologians within the Catholic Church who specialise in moral theology (the branch of theology that deals with how people ought to live in the light of Christian teaching) between say the 1800s up to about 1950, you’ll find that they don’t talk about tattooing very much because Catholics were always told that they shouldn’t tattoo themselves. But, when they did talk about tattooing, it was always understood to be a sin against the commandment, ‘Thou shalt not kill’ (because the commandment forbade actions that harmed one’s body) and was therefore a form of self-mutilation.

Those are demonic entry points. We have found that when people get tattoos there are two dangers with them. One is mutilation. But the demon that encouraged the person to get a tattoo considers the tattoo its ‘brand’ on that individual. So the demons will do everything to protect their ‘brand’. The second danger is that a lot of tattoo artists are involved in the occult and so they are putting things in the tattoo ink that include an occult element and so that is also a possible entry point for demonic attack. A lot of times, once someone’s tattoos have been ‘decommissioned’, a lot of their interior battles that they are struggling with cease.”

Here is a shortened version of the tattoo decommissioning prayer published by the St Michael Centre of Spiritual Renewal:

“In the Holy Name of Jesus, through the authority of the natural law and my baptism, through the merits of the Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension of our Lord Jesus and His sending of the Holy Spirit, I decommission this tattoo and break and sever each and every connection between this tattoo and the Evil One and his associates.

I ask you Heavenly Father to drive out any demons that may have attached themselves to me as a result of this tattoo and that you purify the ink that was used to make it. I ask that you sever each and every connection between the image and each and every demon who may have attached themselves to me as a result of the tattoo.

In the name of Jesus, I nullify each and every claim or rights demons may assert to have over me due to any magical images, symbols or scripts incorporated into the tattoo. And through the sign of the Cross, I consecrate myself to our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Stephen Rossetti wrote his comments in “Exorcist Diary #219: Tattoo as a Demonic Portal”, of his blog which may be found on the website of the St Michael Centre for Spiritual Renewal.

Father Ripperger made his comments in an interview entitled “Fr. Chad Ripperger on Tattoos, Occuktism and Demonic Entry Points” which can be watched at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mh-Kc6vGlpU&t=267s&pp=ygU6VGF0dG9vcywgT2NjdWt0aXNtIGFuZCBEZW1vbmljIEVudHJ5IFBvaW50cyBjaGFkIHJpcHBlcmdlcg%3D%3D&ra=m

A Little Child Snatched from the Jaws of Death

Agnes Sanford wrote, “The time came when I felt strongly urged to march myself to a hospital and offer to pray for a child desperately ill with a streptococcus infection. This was in the days before the miracle drugs, and the child had the infection in the heart, the kidneys, and the bloodstream. His parents belonged to the parish but did not know that God could still heal today just as He has always done.

I was terrified. I would as soon have walked up to the mouth of a cannon, or so I thought. But the urge of compassion was strong, for I knew the child would die unless something intervened. So I drove to the hospital, having at last with a terrible struggle learned to drive, and walked in. I spoke to the mother, who promptly dissolved in tears and would have let me do anything I wanted to do. She took me to the room of the little threeyear-old and there left me alone. Strange to say, as soon as I sat down beside the bed and began to talk to the child, I had no fear at all! The venture seemed as simple and as natural as if I had been doing it all my life.

‘Larry, when you go to kindergarten, they teach you about Jesus, don’t they?’ The child nodded, his big blue eyes very solemn. ‘Did they ever give you a picture of Jesus?’ He nodded again, his face brightening a bit. (Nowadays they would probably give the child a picture of a squirrel instead. It does not have the same effect). ‘Well, you remember when people were sick, Jesus put his hand on them and prayed for them to get well, and they did, didn’t they?’ This time Larry said, ‘Yes’ in a small whisper. ‘He told us we were to do the same thing’, I said. ‘Now I’m not as big as Jesus, and I’m just starting to do this, but he said to do it, so shall we try? He said he would be here to help us, you know, even though we don’t see him.’ The child nodded, completely understanding. ‘Cause he’s visible’, he said (meaning ‘invisible’).

I laid my hands on the region of the heart and simply asked Jesus to make him well, and then I thanked Jesus because I knew He was doing it. The next day the child's bloodstream and heart were free of infection. The kidneys took one more day. But in three days he was at home, completely recovered. God had snatched a little child from the jaws of death.”

Agnes Sanford told this story in her autobiography entitled “Sealed Orders”, (Bridge Publishing, Logos International, 1972).

The supernatural is the normal Christian life

Mary Healy said, “Jesus carried out his mission in the anointing of the Holy Spirit so that he proclaimed the gospel in both words and in deeds of power that demonstrate that the words were true. Then he told his followers (first the 12 apostles and then the 70 other disciples) to proclaim the gospel both in words and in supernatural deeds of power. Now it’s possible to read that passage where Jesus sends out the 70 and still think the way I used to think: ‘Oh, that’s so wonderful! Jesus sent out those disciples during his earthly life when he was founding the church and he gave them a special power to do healings and miracles and that was because the church was beginning and he was there. But, of course, what he did with them has nothing to do with me.’

But then I realised that I can’t think that way because it’s not true to the Word of God. I realised that there’s another passage we have to look at. It’s at the end of the Gospel of Mark. It is where Jesus has risen from the dead and he’s about to ascend into heaven and he gives his final instructions before leaving earth. So it must be important, right? According to Mark, these were his last words before he ascended to heaven. And this is what he says in Mark 16;15-18: ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.’

Jesus did not say, ‘These signs will accompany a few extraordinarily gifted people’ or ‘These signs will accompany a few canonised saints.’ That’s not what he said. He said, ‘These signs will accompany those who believe.’ If you believe, these words are for you!

Jesus also did not say, ‘Now look. What I’m telling you is for the first generation. It’s not for the people who come afterward.’ There are those who have believed that the power of the Holy Spirit, and signs, wonders and miracles, was only for the beginning of church history, not for now. In fact, St Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 AD) thought miracles were just for the beginning, and that now the church was in the 4th Century, it was fully mature and didn’t need miracles anymore. But then St Augustine was forced to change his mind because the Lord did so many healings and miracles in his own diocese that he could no longer deny it. So he realised that the church needed, and was given, the power of the Holy Spirit for signs and wonders in the 4th century.

And here were are, in the third millennium of the church. Does the world have any less need to see the power of God, to see that Jesus is alive, than the world 2,000 years ago? No! All the more in our godless age do people need to see that our God is a God of power; and that our God is a God who loves and has compassion on those who are suffering; and that our God is a God who heals and does miracles and who delivers and sets people free.

And how does he do this? For some really strange reason, the all powerful and omnipotent God likes to do it through people like you and me.”

Dr Mary Healy made these comments during her talk “The Supernatural is the Normal Christian Life” at a Catholic Charismatic Renewal conference given in Belgium in 2025. It can be watched at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lC2u9l1fEQ

What is the spirit of death and how do you become demonised by one?

Ken Fish made these comments during a recent sermon in Egypt, “A spirit of death is one of the most powerful spirits. The objective of the spirit of death is to shorten our lifespan and bring us to a premature death. In Mark 5;1-20 we have the story of the Gadarene Demoniac. This man was bound by the spirit of death. We know from the accounts of this story, here and in Matt 8;28-34 and Luke 8;26-39, that this man was obsessed with death. He was living in a graveyard and yet could have lived in a cave instead. He was probably sleeping in one of the tombs or in a sarcophagus. So why would you live amongst tombs except that your mind was fixed upon death? You might not be seeking death, but you would be thinking about it a lot. We can see this in people today. They may not be living in a graveyard but they are thinking and worrying about death. Amongst youth culture they might be dressing in black and listening to songs about death. In the West we would call that a death metal cult.

Another characteristic of this man was that he had some unusual abilities. When they would chain him, the man would break the chains. While they didn’t have modern metallurgy, the people of that day knew that chains could hold people. When something happens that is ‘non-normal’, that is an indication that something supernatural may be there. But it wasn’t only that the man had supernatural strength. If we read the wider story about how Jesus was approaching this area in a boat, we see that they encountered a storm which Jesus rebuked with authority. What I infer is that this was not some random evil spirit, but rather it was a powerful, high level evil spirit. I would call it a ‘regional spirit’. It seems to have had authority over the entire ten cities known as the Decapolis.

This man was also crying out. He was tormented in both his mind and his emotions. So where someone’s thought processes are severely disrupted, that might be an indication that there is a spirit of death at work.

The text also said that he cut himself with stones. Today we would call him ‘a cutter’, someone who engages in self-harm.

The man had multiple demons, not just one. The ruling spirit inside him was called ‘Legion’. Many commentators have said that a Roman legion typically had between 6,000 and 10,000 soldiers. (This dispels the myth that, if people have demons, it’s only one or two). So the man had multiple demons and multiple problems with each of those demons.

The text also says that at times the man was naked. The parallel passage in Luke 8 says that, ‘for a long time he had worn no clothes.’ God designed the human body to be beautiful and Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed in the Garden of Eden. But after the Fall they put clothes on.

The man also seems to have been suicidal in his thoughts. Although the text doesn’t say that he had tried to kill himself, we know that, when the demons came out of him into the pigs, the pigs committed su***de. So people who have thoughts of su***de, that might be a symptom of having a spirit of death.

We read in Mark 5;5 that the man lived amongst the tombs and the mountains. There’s nothing wrong with being an introvert but when you can’t function in normal society, that too might be a symptom of having a spirit of death.

So how is it that we get demonised by a spirit of death? Firstly, it sometimes comes to us through our ancestors. Let’s say that there is a history of su***de or premature death in our family. Or perhaps there is a lethal disease that runs in our family, such as a rare form of cancer. In my family there was a rare form of cancer. It started with an old curse from a Native American chief in the state of Michigan. My great grandfather had planted a fruit orchard on the land which he owned. One day he was working on the trees and a Native American chief walked out of the woods. He said to my great grandfather, ‘This is sacred ground. We buried our dead here. You have defiled it by planting an orchard here.’ Then he cursed my great grandfather. My great grandfather then developed a strange and rare kind of stomach cancer and died in agony. His daughter developed extreme stomach problems, although not cancer. However every single one of her children, including my mother, developed the same kind of stomach cancer that my great grandfather had. Then every single child that was born to my mother and her siblings started to have stomach problems. When I was aged 30, I was in a meeting with a well known prophet. He announced that he was going to pray for stomach conditions. So I stood up for prayer because I had already started to have the symptoms of that cancer. I was healed. I know I was healed because one of the major research hospitals in the USA did a study on our family because there was a gene they were looking for. All of my cousins had that particular gene and would later either die of this cancer or would have their stomach removed. However my test showed that I did not have the gene. I think the Lord changed my genetics. So a strange and odd kind of disease running in your family can be caused by a spirit of death.

Secondly, some people literally make vows of death. When people join the Freemasons, they take a vow that, if they leave the Freemasons, death will come upon both themselves and upon any descendants they may ever have. Sometime people will have been choices for death rather than for life. This may include su***de attempts. Sometimes people wish they could die although they are not actively seeking death. This attitude is more passive than su***de. You might think, ‘My family would be better off without me. I wish I could die. They would get the life insurance.’

Thirdly, sometimes people pick up a spirit of death from a near-death experience such as a car accident that nearly cost them their life, but didn’t. That experience opens them up to a spirit of death.

Fourthly, sometimes people pick up a spirit of death by being around the dead. It is well known anthropologically across different cultures that there is a common belief in places such as China, Japan, India, North Africa, and Southern Africa and it was also present among the Incas, the Aztecs, the Myans and the Native Americans that, if people get around a dead body within three days of the person dying, they might pick up such a spirit.

Fifthly, any sin a person commits which, under the Old Covenant would have carried the death penalty, may under the New Covenant open them to becoming demonised by a spirit of death. In Prov 7;23 it refers to someone involved in adultery and then an arrow pierces his liver and he dies. Somewhat poetically this suggests that a spirit of death comes upon those who commit the sin of adultery.

Broadly described, a spirit of death can use despair, deep sorrow, and emotional pain to gain entry into our lives. This is the kind of pain experienced by David when he learnt of his son Absalom’s death. In 2 Sam. 18;33 in the midst of his mourning, David says, ‘If only I had died instead of you.’ So any time someone partners with, collaborates with, or longs for death, they are probably falling under the domain of the spirit of death. I remember praying for a woman in Australia who had lost her baby. She was inconsolable with grief. She wanted to leave her husband and three children for the baby who had died. We had to get her out from the domain of death and drive that spirit out. Death is always our enemy, the last enemy to be destroyed (1Cor 15;26).

What are some other common symptoms of this spirit? We see in Mark 5 that the man in the graveyard cut himself. In Leviticus 19;28 the Bible forbids cutting yourself. It specifically refers to cutting yourself for the dead. The scriptures in the same verse also forbid us to tattoo ourselves. The reason that cutting, body piercing and tattooing are problematic is that all of them involve the shedding of blood. Furthermore, the Bible forbids the eating of blood and yet this is a feature of national cuisine in many countries. I have had to cast out demons in many countries connected to that cultural practice. Every single human society has a few things in it that are out of compliance with God’s ways. So sometimes we have to think through again things which have become culturally acceptable but which, in God’s mind, are off-limits.

When we think about these issues, people sometimes wonder about the relevance of Leviticus to Christians today. However the Old Testament law can be broken down into three parts. The first is the ceremonial law which deals with the sacrificial system. The book of Hebrews makes it clear that there is no longer any need for the blood of bulls and goats (Heb 10;4). We are not required to follow those laws. The second part of the Old Testament law is the civil law which deals with how you run a society. For example, there are laws for the Israelite society about murder or if someone found their neighbour’s ox. However, those laws were written for a society that existed about 3,500 years ago. We are not required to follow those laws. The third category of Old Testament law is the moral law, which are an ethical code of how we should live. So it forbids idolatry, adultery, witchcraft and other matters. If you study it carefully, you find that everything that is in the ethical code is also found in the New Testament. In Acts 15, at the Jerusalem Council, the apostles decide that gentiles don’t need to follow the sacrificial law or the civil law, but they do need to follow the moral law. The spirit of death looks for a foothold in our lives and it is the love of God which tells us to stay away from certain activities which expose us to the spirit of death.

Once you have diagnosed that someone may have a spirit of death, try and work out how death was bequeathed to the person. I have given you a long list of reasons and to why someone may have picked up such a spirit. When you identify it, have the person confess that. Then you can forgive it using the authority granted to the church in John 20;23. If the person has made agreements with death, then lead them in a renunciation of those agreements. After that, break the power of those agreements. Then command the spirit of death to leave the person. The glory of Jesus’ resurrection is that Jesus defeated death, not only so that we would not grieve like the world grieves when our loved ones die, but so that we can be freed from the effects of death in our lives now and live healthier lives.”

This is an edited version of Ken Fish’s sermon given at New Life Ministry in Cairo on 8 May 2026.
