Rising Sons’ of Saintfield Visit Barnamaghery Orange Lodge No11

On Wednesday 25 March, Saintfield District Juniors visited Barnamaghery LOL 11. The lodge originally called Wellington True Blues is one of the oldest warrants issued and comes with a very colourful history as explained to the boys by Bro Thomas Woods.

The history of the warrant goes back to the formation off the Orange Order and was granted to the 17th Light Dragoons, based in Richhill and who went on to fight under The Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular war in Spain.

At the battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812 Wellington defeated the French and only three members of the Lodge survived. One survivor Solomon White returned home to Lisburn after being discharged from the army and in possession of the warrant.

Solomon sold the warrant to James Bell who subsequently gave it to James Thompson of Ballydyan. After examination by Grand Lodge the warrant was declared to be authentic and was first used by a Ballyalgin Lodge before being reissued in 1824 to what is today known as Bamaghery LOL yin yin.

It is fantastic to learn about such a rich and fascinating history of a local lodge within our own senior district. This experience emphasised to the juniors that they are part of something great with a rich and varied history and tradition on our doorstep going back 200 years and is much more than just the twelfth. We cannot wait to learn a lot more about the other lodges within our district.

Many people hear the word “Protestant” and assume it simply means not Roman Catholic. But the word actually has a much deeper and more powerful meaning rooted in faith, conviction, and a stand for the truth of God’s Word.

The term “Protestant” comes from the “Protestation of Speyer” in 1529, when a group of German princes and reformers publicly protested against attempts to suppress the preaching of the Gospel and the authority of the Scriptures. They stood firmly for the truth that the Bible, not human tradition, is the final authority in matters of faith.

In that sense, to be Protestant is not merely about history or denomination. It is about standing for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Reformers believed what the Bible clearly teaches, that salvation is not earned through works, rituals, or church systems, but comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8–9

They also stood on the principle that God’s Word is our supreme authority.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16

Ultimately, the Protestant message is the message of the Gospel itself: that sinners can be forgiven and made right with God through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

Being Protestant therefore means standing, respectfully but firmly, for the truth of the Gospel and the authority of Scripture, just as those believers did nearly 500 years ago.

And today, the same call still stands:
To believe the Word of God.
To trust Christ alone for salvation.
And to proclaim the Gospel boldly.

“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Isaiah 40:8

Proclaiming the greatest goal ever scored — salvation through Jesus Christ.

CALLUM McVEIGH

The family of the late Callum McVeigh would like to express their heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciation to all relatives, friends, neighbours, and to everyone who sympathised, supported, and prayed with us during our recent and tragic bereavement on Christmas Eve 2025.
We are deeply grateful to all those who sent flowers, food, and cards, and to those who helped in any way. A special word of thanks to his close friends who stayed late each evening to sing, pray, and bring comfort to us during such a difficult time and I know his girlfriend Esther is very grateful for their ongoing support and prayers.
Marcus, Lisa and Ethan are extremely grateful to all those who attended Callum’s funeral and although it was not possible to extend our thanks to everyone in person (due to the large number of attendees) we are very grateful to everyone who came to Callum’s funeral which demonstrated not only how much he meant to us but that he also touched other people’s lives during his short life.
Seeing so many people who knew Callum and hearing their stories reminded us of just how special he was- not only to us, but to so many others. Your presence, your words, your praise, and your prayers brought us great comfort at this extremely difficult time.
We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Reverend Small and the congregation of Raffrey Presbyterian Church for their support and assistance with the funeral service, catering, parking and transport. We would also like to thank both the Reverend Small and Reverend Martin for a funeral service which reflected Callum’s love of life and encouraged others to seek Christ.
Callum was saved, and he would have deeply appreciated the message shared by the Reverend Small, urging everyone to ensure they too are saved. Callum loved the Free Presbyterian socials, and it was through their tent mission that he came to know Christ. If even one person is encouraged to come to Christ through Callum’s passing, then his death will not have been in vain. It is our sincere wish that others will come to know the Lord.
We would also like to thank everyone who helped with the catering in any way, those who supplied sandwiches and buns and helped to serve. We would like to thank all those who supplied and assisted with transport and parking. Our thanks also go to Derryboye primary school, Darragh Cross GAA and Peter Jackson for allowing parking on their premises.
Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has contributed to Callum’s chosen charity- the BB Project in Uganda. His Aunt Samantha travelled there on a BB trip a few years ago, and Callum was fascinated by her stories. He loved wearing the Ugandan football shirt she brought back. Your generosity has raised over £4,000 so far, and we are deeply grateful.
We are very grateful to everyone who shared memories of Callum’s life on social media, especially those that spoke of his love for football and the gospel. We also appreciate all the sporting organisations that marked Callum’s passing with moments of silence or applause and for the many social media posts that were written about Callum from the football community and beyond. These messages, which reflected Callum’s love of life, brought us great comfort during this difficult time.
We extend our sincere thanks to all those involved on the day of his accident- the Air Ambulance, the Police, Health and safety, Coroner and everyone who attended the scene on Christmas Eve. Your efforts and care will never be forgotten. We are grateful for the help and professionalism of Martin from Charles Rourke & Sons (funeral directors) who helped us during this difficult time.
It is impossible to thank everyone individually, but we hope that this acknowledgement expresses, in some small way, our heartfelt appreciation and deepest gratitude for all the support we have received.
Callum was a wonderful son, taken from us suddenly and far too soon. Our family would like to thank everyone who has supported us and offered comfort during this heartbreaking time.
We never got to say goodbye or tell you once more how much you were loved, as you were gone in the blink of an eye. But you are at peace in Heaven now. We love you with all our hearts, Callum- until we meet again.
Jesus said..’’I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die”..

Saintfield Juniors held their first monthly Lodge meeting of 2026 on Wednesday 18 February and we welcomed four new members 💪. Boys had a go at making pancakes 🥞 (apologies to parents for the over use of maple syrup) along with playing quick cricket. Great start to 2026 and great to see such a large turnout of boys.

15/02/2026

Hi folks, the first meeting of the junior Lodge is this Wednesday night at Ballygowan Orange Hall at 7.30pm. It would be great to see everyone back again.

Remember if any of your boys have friends who would like to join they will be made very welcome. 👍
