Our District hosted our first Orange Victims Day parade this morning, which was very well attended by local brethren and sisters.

In memory of the 344 members of the Orange Institution who were murdered by terrorists during the period known as The Troubles, a service was held outside our hall at the memorial plaque that was erected this time last year.

Assistant Grand Master, Wor Bro Worthington McGrath led the remembrance service and afterwards a parade of the town took place led by a single piper.

We would like to thanks all of those who attended. Every one of our lodges were represented, alongside Orange women, junior boys and junior girls, who led the parade by carrying our victims banner. Thankyou also to piper Glenn Cupples.

Today, the 1st September, we mark Orange Victims Day by remembering the 344 Brethren and one Sister who died as a result of terrorism.

While no member of the Order in Newtownards lost their life as a result of the republican terror campaign, there were 40 brethren from across County Down who did, some from neighbouring districts.

We should all take a moment today to remember those murdered, some as they carried out their duties in the security forces, others as they went about their daily lives - brethren all.

Our District will hold its first Orange Victims Day parade on Saturday 5th September.

Last year we unveiled a memorial plaque outside Newtownards Orange Hall, which commemorated of the hundreds of orangemen and women whose lives were taken by terrorist acts.

On 5th September a memorial service will be held at the plaque, starting at 10.30am and this will be followed by a short parade around the town centre at 11am, led by a lone piper.

We invite all orange brethren and sisters to join the parade and would also welcome any members of the public to observe the service.
