The works to create and equip a sacristy in the cathedral have been completed and the result is proving very useful. It will help us with the regular services and the large diocesan and provincial occasions. The handbasin has been replaced with a kitchen sink and work surface along with much needed storage. The work was funded by a diocesan grant and a legacy.

Thinking of all those getting A-level results today. For those who have got the grades they hoped for to move on to university or to fulfill their aspirations for work/apprenticeship etc -congratulations!

To those who are left feeling disappointed and haven’t got quite what they hoped for to move forward as planned - take a deep breath, don’t panic, take advice from your school or college, receive offers of help and hear words of encouragement from family and friends.

Remember you are far more than a set of grades, you have gifts that make you unique, you are someone who is loved by those who care about you. You have not reached a dead end, but a fork in the road. Although things may be scary, unclear, confusing right now, there is a way forward for you.

If you need a space to collect your thoughts, to have some thinking space, to find some peace and quiet Newport Cathedral is open all day. Come in, sit down, rest in the peace, know you are loved beyond measure and let the peace of this place enfold you. A harbour in the storm for any who are struggling.

I have lit a candle before the icon of Christ in the Cathedral for all receiving results today. Note the words Christ is holding on the open book ‘Come to me all who are weary and overburdened and I will give you rest…’

We will be remembering all those who are celebrating and those who are struggling today in our services in our prayers.

We always begin Morning Prayer on Thursdays with a prayer for peace. Today it coincided with the Feast of the Transfiguration when we celebrate the cloud of glory revealing Christ’s true nature and also remember a different shaped cloud of darkness as the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on this day in 1945. Choose wisely - the cloud of glory and the way of the Prince of Peace.
