Please find attached a flyer for a forthcoming exhibition at Shieldfield Art Works (SAW) (NE2 1YH).

The exhibition is called Jagged Edges and is an exhibition by survivors of church related abuse exploring their experiences through the lense of the Passion narrative.

Whilst it is a bit of a daunting subject, SAW believes it's an important one for us to engage with.

If anyone has any questions about the exhibition please feel free to get in touch with Benji Spence, Communications Officer at [email protected].

The Newcastle Central and East Circuit seeks a Student and Young Adult worker to join the Ministry Team (part-time for a fixed term of 3 years). The Student and Young Adult Worker would be based at Jesmond Methodist Church (NE2 2DL) but have the opportunity to get alongside Jesmond Methodist’s New People for New Places work in Shieldfield.

Newcastle upon Tyne is home to Newcastle University and Northumbria University, with a combined student population of 42,000. Many students stay in the city after graduation seeking employment in the region, and other young adults go straight into employment or apprenticeships from school. The Newcastle District has international student work based in the Circuit (the International Student Centre), which also contributes to Newcastle University’s chaplaincy team, and for the past seven years Jesmond Methodist Church (JMC) has developed a ministry to Student and Young Adults and been the base of the Circuit Student and Young Adult Worker.

JMC has grown rapidly in past 10 years and 80% of the congregation are under 40 years old. Jesmond is a vibrant part of the city with a high student population, a 20-minute walk from the City Centre. Neighbouring Shieldfield a 10-minute walk from the City Centre, has seen an explosion of new student accommodation. It is the home of the Circuit project, Shieldfield Art Works (SAW) a Christian art-based community project based in a redundant Methodist Church. From September 2024 the JMC Lay Pastor and Student and Young Adult worker is being redeployed to be Lay Pastor of the Jesmond Shieldfield area working in JMC, SAW and the NPNP.

This is an exciting opportunity to primarily be part of a growing church seeking to disciple and outreach to students and young adults at JMC and to join in establishing a new Christian community in Shieldfield. We are seeking a Student and Young Adult worker to join the Ministry Team, which will include the new Superintendent of the Circuit, Rev Alison Wilkinson, the redeployed Lay Pastor Adam Wilkinson and the new Student and Young Adult Worker.

JOB TITLE: Student and Young Adult Worker (Part time for a fixed term of 3 years)
EMPLOYED BY: The Newcastle Central and East Circuit, Methodist Church.
DEPENDENT ON: Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Check
LOCATION: Jesmond Methodist Church and the Shieldfield NPNP Project
RESPONSIBLE TO: Adam Wilkinson (Lay Pastor)

Please apply by contacting Sue Walker at [email protected] to request an Application Form and Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form to be returned by 10am on 5th August. Interviews will be held on Tuesday 13th August at Jesmond Methodist Church/Zoom. You will hear back from Tuesday 6th August if we invite you to interview.

A reflection by Rev Paul Cleever-Thorpe

16/04/2020

"Touch of the Master’s Hand," by Myra Welsh

T’was battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But held it up with a smile.
"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who’ll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar," then, two! Only two?
"Two dollars, and who’ll make it three?
"Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
Going for three . . . "But no,
From the room, far back, a grey haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said: "What am I bid for the old violin?"
And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand dollars, and who’ll make it two?
Two thousand! And who’ll make it three?
Three thousand, once; three thousand, twice;
And going and gone," said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
"We do not quite understand
What changed its worth?" Swift came the reply:
"The touch of a master’s hand."
And many a man with life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A "mess of potage," a glass of wine;
A game, and he travels on.
He is "going" once, and "going" twice,
He’s "going" and almost "gone."
But the Master comes and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that’s wrought
By the touch of the Master’s hand.
