"Humanitarian work is central to Christian Aid’s mission: responding to the urgent needs of crisis-affected communities and giving them the means to stand on their own feet is exactly why Christian Aid was created.

Throughout our history, we have responded to some of the worst disasters our world has faced – the Ethiopian famine, the South Asian tsunami, the Ebola outbreak – as well as forgotten or protracted crises such as in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We have increased the breadth and depth in our humanitarian programme in recent years.

We commit around half of its total annual income to humanitarian work, reaching millions of people every year."

We've been responding to humanitarian emergencies and disasters since 1945, providing urgently needed immediate relief and long-term support.

The work of Christian Aid

"We aim to end poverty and injustice worldwide by focusing on five key areas. This involves working in partnership with local organisations, as well as with governments and the private sector.

Our work includes helping people to:

- claim their rights and access services such as healthcare and education
- ensure they are not discriminated against for any reason
- become more resilient to shocks and disasters such as drought, climate change and hurricanes
- make the most of opportunities, such as being able to sell their produce for a fair price."

This Christian Aid week we are collecting to support the work they do. We have an online envelope if you are able to donate. All donations are gratefully received.

This Christian Aid Week, I’m supporting families facing hunger in Nairobi. Parents like Fridah are growing food in small city spaces so their children can eat. With tools, seeds and training, families can plan for the future. Please give what you can this Christian Aid Week.

Does Christian Aid favour women?

"We appreciate that gender issues are often contested, especially in a polarised political climate such as the one in which we live. However, we have always been clear that every human being, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality, is made in the image and likeness of God and that as such, they should always be treated with dignity and love.
It’s on that basis that we have programmes that promote equality between women and men, and programmes to tackle discrimination and violence against LGBT people.
Inequality between women and men is a key driver of poverty. The COVID-19 pandemic has widened many existing inequalities (more girls than boys have dropped out of school, and more women than men lost work in the countries in which we work).
Conflicts in countries in which we work expose women and girls to high levels of sexual violence. We know that many of our supporters care very much about these issues of gender justice, and we believe it’s right that they are an important dimension of our work.
It is worth saying that our work reaches and benefits men and boys as well as women and girls and is designed to help families and communities to thrive and stay together, not least by creating conditions in which they can secure a livelihood in the areas where they currently live."

Does Christian Aid support LGBTQ+ people?

"At Christian Aid we believe that everyone is equal in the sight of God, and we work to ensure that one day all people will live a life of dignity, equality and justice, free from poverty.
Our Christian beliefs inform our work and our position as fully supportive of LGBTQ+, minority and excluded communities.
We understand that people in poverty often face several, intersecting inequalities based on their identities. With this knowledge we strive for a more inclusive world where identity – gender, ethnicity, caste, religion, class, sexual orientation, disability, age – is no longer a barrier to equal treatment."

This week is Christan Aid week - but what do they do?

"Everyone is equal in the sight of God
For 80 years, this truth has inspired us to stand together in solidarity with our most marginalised global neighbours, of all faiths and none.
Poverty is an outrage against humanity. It robs people of their dignity and lets injustice thrive.
We seek to eradicate extreme poverty by tackling its root causes. Together with people living in poverty, we amplify our voices to speak truth to power and create lasting change"

How is each £1 of Christian Aid’s income used?
"In the financial year ending 31 March 2024, for every £1 we received, we spent:
84p in our life-changing work including: working for long-term change, responding to humanitarian emergencies and using our voice to call for global change.
16p in our fundraising and awareness raising to attract new supporters to make all the above work possible. For every £1 we invest, we secure more than £6 in return"

We are a global movement of people, churches and local organisations. We are the changemakers, the peacemakers, the mighty of heart.
