Benwell & Scotswood Team Parish We are four churches in the Parish of Benwell & Scotswood in the West end of Newcastle. We hope that this love informs everything we do.

We believe that Jesus calls us to keep two commandments – to love God and our neighbour as ourselves. We are committed to our churches being safe places for everyone. For everyone who knew Christina Wilson, she was a much-loved member of our congregation and served faithfully as our church warden for many, many years.

Christina fell asleep peacefully on 13th August. Her funeral service will be held on 4th September at 12:15pm at St James Church.

We remember Christina with great affection and gratitude, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones at this sad time

🌞 St James Summer Fair – What a Fantastic Day! 🌞

St James held their Summer Fair on Saturday, and what a brilliant turnout we had! The sun was shining, the BBQ was smoking, the ice creams were at the ready, and everyone seemed to be having a fantastic time. 🎉🍦🌭

Ill like to start of with a huge special thank you to Shirley, Jeanette, Liz, Olwynn, Olive, Kath G, Donna, Wendy, Chris F Charley Michael Darren, Shareen, Carole D and Carole R for all your hard work and help in making the day such a success. ❤️

A massive thank you also goes to the band, who came out of retirement especially for us — it was fantastic to have you there! 🎶

We’d also like to say a big thank you to Northumbria Police, who came along and gave the children the chance to explore and try out some of their equipment. It was a great experience for them and really added something special to the day. 👮‍♂️🚓

And finally, a very special thank you to Fr Chris, for allowing Sarah to plan and take charge of the event. It certainly paid off!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that the Summer Fair raised a whopping £1,088! 🎉👏

This money will go towards the running costs of St James and will help us continue providing activities and events for our community.

Thank you to everyone who came along, supported us, donated, helped out and made the day such a success. We couldn’t have done it without you! ❤️

The countdown is on for the St James Church Fair in Benwell! Join us on Saturday 8th August, 2pm–5pm for a fun-filled afternoon while helping support our church and the amazing work it does in the community, including Newcastle food bank, community meals, mental health groups, art groups, and more.

Yesterday, it was announced that Fr Chris has been appointed as the new Vicar of Christ Church Shieldfield and St Ann’s Battlefield, as well as Chaplain to Northumbria University.

Chris writes:

“I came to Benwell and Scotswood for three years as Curate, and more than eight years later, here I am as Acting Team Rector! I stayed because I love it here. You have become my community. You have taught me so much, and you have helped make me the priest I am today.

I am so sad to be leaving, but I hear God calling me and, after much prayer and many conversations with those closest to me, I know this is the right step. Plans are in place for an interim priest to serve the parish until a new team of two full-time clergy is appointed. You’ll receive more information about this in due course.

Please know that I will continue to pray for you, and I ask you to keep me in your prayers too.”

Fr Chris will finish his ministry with us at the end of September. After a short break, he will begin his new role in November.

We’ll share details of Fr Chris’s final service in the coming weeks, when we’ll have the opportunity to give thanks for his faithful ministry among us and wish him every blessing as he begins this new chapter.

A beautiful message from Sarah, one of our churchwardens who was newly elected at our annual meeting yesterday:

Hey everyone, I hope you all have a lovely Bank Holiday Monday!

I wanted to share some good news — at yesterday’s APCM, I was voted in as Churchwarden for St James. I’m really honoured and looking forward to serving in this role.

I’d like to begin by thanking Father Chris Minchin for giving me the opportunity to serve as Churchwarden — although I’m still not entirely sure whether it’s an opportunity or a very well-disguised long-term plan. Either way, I’m here now.

It’s quite something to reflect that, nearly four years ago, I was at a very low point. A simple nudge from Chris Foskett to come along to a Christmas lunch at St James set me on a path that has led to this moment — though I do sometimes wonder if that invitation came with terms and conditions I didn’t fully read.

Since then, I’ve been warmly welcomed into the life of the church — preparing for baptism and confirmation, helping at the food bank, and gradually becoming part of the community. Along the way, I’ve been supported with great kindness, patience, and encouragement… and, thankfully, no one has stopped me yet.

St James has truly become a second home to me. I’m here often enough that I half expect the coffee machine to greet me by name — and at some point, I was even trusted with keys, which in hindsight feels like a significant step.

In all seriousness, I know that St James has my best interests at heart, and I’m deeply grateful for the welcome and support I’ve received here.

I’m very aware that I have big boots to fill. Mike, thank you for your dedication and service over the past few years — you’ve set the bar high, which feels slightly unfair, but I’ll do my best to live up to it.

It’s an honour to take on this role, and I look forward to serving the church and the wider community of St James.

Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way.

Yesterday we welcomed back our craft session, and it was great to see everyone enjoying getting creative again.

Today we welcomed back the art group after a two-week break, and it was lovely to see everyone happy to be together again. The session was full of chatter and creativity, with the older ladies enjoying making their handmade cards.

We were also delighted to welcome Lilly, our new Artist-in-Residence Coordinator, who will bring fresh energy to the group.

This week at St James Church, we kicked off with our new group session, Knot Your Average Crafters, and had a great turnout for the first week. Next week, a few people are looking forward to learning how to sew 🧵.

Today, we also welcomed back the writing group and Shirley’s Café — both were full of smiles, laughter, and happy, and left with full tums. 😊
