Join us this evening for a Sung Eucharist of the Last Supper for Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm. We will reflect on Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and some volunteers will follow Jesus’ example and have their feet washed. After the service ends there will be be an (optional) watch, in a darkened church, until midnight.

Our Lent courses this week were full of lively conversations as we explored the second of our ‘Good Friday People’: St Peter. We started with some scripture then heard an interactive story of how Simon the fisherman became Peter the rock and thought about similarities and difference in his life and that of Judas - our subject last week. No course next week, but why not join us the week after when we’ll be exploring Pontius Pilate?
Join us on either Tuesday 17 March at 7.30, straight after the evening service, or on Thursday 19 March at c10.50, after the morning service.

We’ve had the joy of celebrating three “significant” birthdays in the last couple of weeks. Many happy returns to Ce, Carol and Howard - each a different decade!

Wonderful image of our church on Newcastle City Guides page this morning! Does anyone recognise themselves and/or others from the congregation?

A view of the interior of St. Nicholas' Church, Church Road, South Gosforth, 1978. A group of Girl Guides and Scouts are processing down the nave towards the altar. The children are carrying the Union Jack and their Troop flags.

Am I correct in thinking that the first Sunday of the month was always Church Parade?

Today we said farewell to our curate, Revd Ruth Stradling, as she prepares to move to be Team Vicar of St Columba’s Church, Wideopen. In her final sermon today she reflected on her time here at St Nicholas, in particular: “this is where I became a priest”.

We gave Ruth, and her husband Aidan, some gifts which we hope will remind them of happy times here and we will miss them both tremendously.

Fr Paul ended our service today with prayers of farewell for Ruth and Aidan:

“God of our beginnings and endings, we celebrate all we have shared with Ruth and Aidan and ask your blessing as they continue on their journey. May the love that is in our hearts be a bond that unites us forever, wherever we may be. May the power of your presence bless this moment of our leave-taking; for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Amen”

Our Harvest festival today was a joyful service. Sunday School joined us in church for the whole service, helping Fr Paul tell the story of St Francis, and bringing forward the many donations for the foodbank and People’s Kitchen. The morning ended with a community lunch in the hall.
It’s been a wonderful weekend and we are so grateful to the many members of our congregation who made it happen - as well as the generosity of everyone who donated food and money to our charitable causes.
