๐Ÿ”ฏ Last night there was a small online "Zoom" Havdalah service organised by Ed Horwich and Dana Kahn of the JSCN from 9:00pm. Ed welcomed everybody and introduced songs, then Rabbi Benjy Rickman did the blessings and Malcolm Weisman's son Brian said a few words. ๐ŸŽผ

Here's another one from my library that I keep on the shelves at the Synagogue, not a religious book, not a biography of a statesman, more of a social commentary on diet. Okay... It's a recipe book from sixty years ago and pretty well-thumbed by me over the last half century, as I like to cook. ๐Ÿ˜‹

I had a call yesterday from a chap who was sorting out some effects and came across a new Tallit, so he brought it down to me at Schule. He was a little late, but I passed the time by cutting back an overgrown bush by the back door, in fact you couldn't even get to the back door. I have found out it is a Butterfly Bush or Buddleja Davidii... so there. ๐Ÿฅต

This evening starts Tisha b'Av (ninth of Av) and is an annual ta'anit (fast day) in Rabbinic Judaism. It is a commemoration of a number of disasters in Jewish history, primarily the destruction of both Solomon's Temple by the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the Second Temple by the Roman Empire in Jerusalem. The Book of Lamentations, which mourns the destruction of Jerusalem, is read. ๐Ÿ˜ข

I made a poor judgement call and chose to do some vital weeding in the cemetery, as it has become overgrown in recent weeks due to the rain and warm weather. It took about twenty minutes before I had to admit to myself "I am an elderly man at a poor level of fitness." I am perspiring quite heavily and well out of puff. Inside to towel myself down, wash up and drink a litre of cold lemonade. ๐Ÿฅต

As it's a lovely sunny Spring day, I thought that I'd have a little tidy up in the cemetery while I wait for the school to arrive for my "talk." After ten minutes, I'd had enough hot sunshine and went inside to photograph another one of the interesting books from our "library." ๐Ÿค“

Twelve months ago, I repotted most of the small shrubs at the front of the prayer hall, which was NOT an easy task, as the twenty year old wooden pots had rotted and the roots had grown into the ground beneath them. After many hours over several weeks, I completed the task and now my labours have borne fruit, or in this case... blossoms. They've NEVER flowered before. ๐ŸŒธ

I was tidying up my mug cupboard (don't ask), when I found this and as you can see, it's a Passover plate manufactured by Grindley for George Jones. The text reads... ืขื‘ื“ื™ื ื”ื™ื™ื ื• ืœืคืจืขื” ื‘ืžืฆืจื™ื (Avadim hayinu le'Pharaoh be'Mitzrayim) ๏ฟฝ"We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt" and... ื•ื”ื’ื“ืช ืœื‘ื ืš ื‘ื™ื•ื ื”ื”ื•ื ืœืืžืจ (Ve'higgadta le'vinkha ba'yom ha'hu le'mor) ๏ฟฝ"And you shall tell your child on that day, saying..."

Last night we had our little Shavuot service and a little party to primarily commemorates G-d giving the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Also it marks the beginning of a summer wheat harvest and consumption of dairy foods. We had vegetarian Pizza, cheesecakes and a vegan cheeseboard. Though I must be honest... some of these pictures are not mine. ๐Ÿค“

Last night saw he start of Shavuot, a major Jewish holiday that commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and marks the ancient wheat harvest. Celebrated seven weeks after Passover, it is traditionally observed by staying up all night to study scripture, eating dairy foods and reading the Book of Ruth. We have a party and eat cheesecake. ๐Ÿฐ
