Nottinghamshire is where George Fox first attended silent meeting for worship

Happy Mother’s Day to Elizabeth Hooton, who “mothered” a young George Fox. He was 22 and she was 47 when he showed up at the door of her farmhouse in Nottinghamshire to share his experiences of faith. She became his first convert and his mentor, helping him find his voice in the early days of the Quaker movement.

Hooton spent her life supporting Fox and his ideas. As a Quaker minister, she interrupted court proceedings and church services, confronted magistrates and kings, and repeatedly put her life in danger; she was whipped, jailed, and exiled into the wilderness.

When she was in her 70s, Fox asked Hooton to accompany him on a missionary trip across the Atlantic. Though Hooton had made that hazardous crossing three times before, she went on a motherly impulse. As it turned out, Fox’s health was very bad on that voyage, and he survived thanks to Hooton’s care. Hooton herself passed away shortly after arriving in Jamaica.
