The Alresford Area Churches
Every August 9th at St Mary’s church in Old Alresford there is a special service to commemorate the first meeting of the Mothers’ Union that took place at Old Alresford Place on 9th August 1876

Mary Sumner, the wife of the vicar, had realised how little support there was for new mothers. She set up the Mothers’ Union, a Christian organisation open to any new mother.

We are proud to be ringing the very bells Mary Sumner would have heard. We marked the 150th anniversary by ringing a Quarter peal before the service on August 9th this year. The 6 strong band was up of Mothers as a tribute to the fantastic work this organisation offers

Later in the afternoon 4 mothers from the Alresford band ventured up to the Cathedral to join some more Mums…and Dads…to ring before the special Evensong service to commemorate the anniversary.

We all felt very privileged to be take part in this important event for a fantastic organisation, that was founded on our doorstep, that helps so many people, in this country and all around the world

Happy Anniversary Mothers’ Union!

Next weekend is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Mothers Union by Mary Sumner, wife of the Rector of Old Alresford, when her eldest daughter gave birth. What is not well known is that Mary Sumner's son in law was Arthur P Heywood, a very well known bell ringer.

We don't know if Sir Arthur ever rang here, but he came up with a principle Duffield Major, which is a just little more complex than Plain Bob Major, but simpler than Kent Treble Bob Major, both of which we rang last week. Therefore let's see if we can ring Duffield this Friday…..yes we can!
