It’s A Funny Old Game.

To Beverly’s delight (Not !!), World Cup 2026 kicked off on Thursday.
I caught some of the opening game between Mexico and South Africa, and watched in amazement at some of the skills exhibited, cringed when mistakes happened, one of which led to the first (of many?) red card of the tournament.

This made me think.
A player trains hard all week, practising his skills, doing his best to persuade the head coach, the one in charge, to select him.
He then has 90 minutes to convince him to keep him on the team, or be substituted, or perhaps discarded, never to be selected again over the next 6 weeks.
A 90 minute interview, in effect. One which takes place week in, week out, during the life (footballing wise) of the player, whether at his home club or in representing his country.

Our salvation is not like this, thankfully. We do not have to perform to convince God we are worthy of selection. The moment we were chosen and accepted a position on God’s team, we were in for life, unless we chose to walk off and turn our back on Him.
If we make a mistake, which turns out to be costly, our position on the team is assured.

Friends, we were sought, we were bought, and we remain His.
The comfort that gives me, as I slip, as I fall. I still remain in favour, and am still considered an important member of the team.

A chorus I first heard 27 years ago in Johannesburg, in Crystal Church:-
“I am redeemed, bought at a price. Jesus has changed my whole life.
If anyone should ask, “just who I am?”
Tell them, “I am redeemed”

No amount of failure will keep us from God’s love.
Scripture tells us in Romans 8 v 38-39, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

It’s a funny old game, this game of life.
Whatever this past week, this past month, has done to your self confidence, remember, you are valued, you are wanted, you are loved.

And as for the coming week?
Be a blessing and be blessed, be an encourager and be encouraged and be ‘doers of good’.

Blessings
Gareth

What Price Freedom?

What defines a historic event? How much time must have elapsed for it to be considered history.
My schooldays looked at events from 1066 through to the American War of Independence.
These days, the retelling of WW2 is counted as history, but for many, it may be recalled as if yesterday.

Yesterday we remembered the momentous event known as D-Day, the 6th June, 1944. When 156,000 men landed in Normandy in a concerted effort to free Europe from the tyranny of N**i Germany.
More than 4000 military personnel lost their life that first day, it is estimated that around 22,000 Allied armed forces were killed during that campaign.
Along with Armistice Day, D-Day is remembered as a solemn occasion, a heavy price paid so that we may be freed from the shackles of war.
For many, the horrors of war are a distant memory, or a story from the history books, and for that, we must thank God.
For some, they live in war conditions daily, which is why we are to pray constantly that peace reigns, not conflict.
-
But as believers, we have encountered our own battle, the war to free us from sin.
Unlike in WW2, the battle was and is not fought by flesh, by man, rather the battle was fought by Christ going to The Cross. The victory assured by His Resurrection.

We are freed from the chains of sin, because of His sacrifice, from accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour and as scripture tells us in John 8 v 31-36, “…and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

To know, is to perceive, to understand to recognise and to realise.
We are no longer confused and oppressed, we have been set free and given eternal life through the gift of Salvation.

D-Day was Calvary, VE Day was the day we accepted Christ.

What price freedom?
It comes at a cost of laying down one’s life for others .
As we recall the sacrifices of many, above all, let us remember the sacrifice of The One, so that we may be set free.
And in that freedom, let us honour Him, by being Salt & Light in our family, our neighbourhood and our workplace.
Let us be encouragers, let us be a blessing and let us be ‘doers of good.

Be blessed,
Gareth
