On 9th August 1965, the original foundation stone for the new YMCA building on Pen y Dre, Tonna, Neath was laid by Mr Martin Evans-Bevan, on behalf of his father Sir David Martin Evans-Bevan Bart. J.P., on the site of the former Neath Workhouse. The Neath YMCA had moved to the ‘Workhouse’ , known as Lletty Nedd, in 1961, and just a few years later the new Headquarters was finished, with a sports hall, lesser hall, a table tennis room, showers and dressing rooms.
From its formation in 1875 by local volunteers, Clergy and Civic leaders the Neath YMCA created an opportunity for young men to gather, learn and find encouragement to lead purposeful, healthy lives, .utilising hired rooms in Neath.
By the 20th Century Neath YMCA was woven into the fabric of Neath life, and now in it’s 150th year is a trusted and dependable presence in Neath. a vibrant hub for the community, welcoming not just young men but people of different ages and backgrounds.
Social events, sports teams and outreach programmes added to its calendar, with its members playing an active role in supporting those in need.
Now, as YMCA Neath celebrates 150 years of service in 2025, it stands as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of community spirit. From its foundations in the old Workhouse to its present role as a beacon of hope and opportunity, surviving the collapse of the YMCA organization through local resilience and community support, the ‘YM’ continues to inspire and uplift people of all ages, and looks forward to the next chapter of its remarkable story, embracing innovation while staying true to its core values.
