Book Review: Muhammad ﷺ: al-Insān al-Kāmil (Muhammad ﷺ: The Perfect Human Being).

This is an amazing work by the late Muhaddith of the Haram Shaykh al-Islam al-Sayyid Muhammad bin Alawi al-Maliki (Allah have mercy on him).

This book speaks extensively about the Prophet ﷺ, highlighting his perfection in every aspect and refuting the claim that the Prophet ﷺ was merely a man like you and me.

It discusses his beautiful voice, his beautiful head, his beautiful eyes, his beautiful eyebrows, his beautiful body, his beautiful hair, and many other aspects of his physical beauty and perfection.
The book also addresses and refutes doubts raised by those who claim that the Prophet ﷺ committed mistakes or possessed some form of deficiency (naqṣ). It responds to these claims and explains the perfection of the Prophet ﷺ in matters related to his conduct and character and more.

It also discusses the character and qualities of the Prophet ﷺ: his asceticism, generosity, patience, forgiveness, forbearance, humility, and many other noble qualities.

Furthermore, the book speaks about his unique characteristics and special qualities, those virtues and distinctions that belong specifically to him ﷺ and that no other person possesses or can possess.
It also discusses how the Prophet ﷺ treated his family, how he interacted with those around him, and how he dealt even with those who disliked him, opposed him, and rejected his message.
In short, the book presents a comprehensive portrayal of the Prophet ﷺ, covering his physical beauty, his noble character, his exceptional virtues, his unique qualities, his interactions with others, and the perfection with which Allah سبحانه وتعالى distinguished him.

Tour of the SBC Masjid Library: Fath al-Bārī
At its simplest, Fath al-Bārī is a sharḥ (commentary) on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. However, it is much more than a straightforward explanation. Ibn Hajar follows the structure of al-Bukhārī’s collection and explains the meanings of the hadiths, the chapter headings, their wording, chains of transmission, and the different scholarly interpretations surrounding them. Modern research describes the work as employing a comprehensive methodology that combines hadith analysis, linguistic study, jurisprudence (fiqh), and comparison of scholarly opinions.
One of its great strengths is Ibn Hajar's attention to the relationship between al-Bukhārī's chapter headings and the hadiths placed beneath them. Al-Bukhārī's arrangement is often highly deliberate, and Ibn Hajar seeks to uncover the reasoning behind why a particular hadith appears in a particular chapter. He also addresses objections that scholars raised concerning some of al-Bukhārī's headings and provides arguments in defence or explanation of them.
The commentary also examines the Arabic language of the hadiths, including vocabulary, grammar and different possible meanings. This is important because understanding a short prophetic statement can sometimes depend on the precise meaning of an Arabic word or grammatical construction. Research on Ibn Hajar's linguistic method highlights how extensively Fath al-Bārī engages with these questions.
Another major component is hadith criticism. Ibn Hajar discusses chains of transmission (isnād), narrators, variant narrations and differences in wording. He does not merely present the hadiths but investigates how the various reports relate to one another. Studies of the work show that he also engages in analysis of the text (matn) of hadith, applying critical principles to assess and reconcile different narrations.

An excellent opportunity to sit together, learn and understand the meaning and message of the Qur’an, with a great teacher, Shaykh Asrar Rashid.

✨ This week: Start of Surah Yusuf (عليه السلام)

The Qur’an describes the beautiful and powerful story of Prophet Yusuf (عليه السلام), from the jealousy of his brothers and his separation from his father, to the trials he faced in Egypt and his eventual honour and reunion with his family.
It is a story of patience, trust in Allah, forgiveness and how Allah’s plan unfolds even through the most difficult of circumstances.

Come along, benefit from the lesson, and invite your family, friends and others to join you!
Come and reconnect with the Qur’an, not just by reciting it, but by understanding it.
