God our Heavenly Father,
we praise You for every human person,
the centre of Your Creation,
made in Your image and likeness,
and called to eternal life with You.
Forgive all that we have done that is contrary to Your love
for every person,
bless our efforts to protect the dignity of each and every one of your children,
especially those who are most vulnerable,
and to create an environment where everyone
feels safe and cared for,
that we may treat all with love and compassion
in the way that Your Son showed us,
and so reflect Your love in the world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Mary, our Mother, pray for us

From Laetare Sunday:

His disciples are with him when Jesus first meets a man who has been blind from birth. The disciples see the poor man sitting there and begging but show themselves quite blind to his misery and also to the power of Jesus. They do not ask their Master to intervene. Instead they treat the blind man, as a good topic for a theological discussion: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” They do not show any feeling for the impoverished, apparently meaningless existence of the poor man. But by the end of the encounter with Jesus, the man born blind has not only received his physical sight but has also come to believe in Jesus and worship him as “Lord.”
Chapter 9 of John’s Gospel presents a scene of universal blindness. There is a man born blind himself. The disciples of Jesus do not see the truth. Some Pharisees are likewise spiritually
blind. At the level of language, the chapter is dominated by words for blindness, eyes and sight. Among all those terms one recurrent phrase, “to open the eyes” suggests a conclusion the evangelist wants his readers to grasp. They can believe themselves to see and presume themselves to have spiritual insight. But it is only when they acknowledge that they are spiritually blind and ask for help that their eyes will be opened by Jesus who is the Light of the world.
