The Lost Treasure
Acts 5:12,16
The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade.
No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.
Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.
As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.
All of them were healed? What a picture! What were these guys up to? What did they have we don’t have and what, dare I ask, have we lost? Answer? The treasure of the Kingdom on earth, the Kingdom of God. The overflow of heaven.
Christianity today is a very poor and lifeless shadow of those post-Pentecost days. I wonder if too many of us are nowadays fixed in the comfortable armchair of ‘where we are’? We like ‘where we are’. We don’t need any change, thank you!
All the pressures on the modern church, pressures mainly loaded onto us by our leaders, all tell us to move on, move forwards into a brighter future by becoming more and more acceptable to the world around us, in our teaching and in the displays of our faith.
But I cry out for the direct opposite to happen. I so desire the Christian Church to go backwards. Not forwards at all!
Back we must go, back in obedience to the calling of Christ, back to the days where God was so actively glorified and demonstrated to anyone and to everyone who came near Christ’s emerging church. We have, over the centuries since those times, turned Christ’s Christianity into Man’s Christianity and it has become much less Christ centred than it could be.
* Let’s start with a holy wish — that ‘I can get interested again’, for God’s sake, in how Christ imagined his church to be.
* Let’s get going, going back to where God always wanted us to be.
