A message from Revβd Nick Cutts:
How many of us have heard the question on a long journey are we there yet? The car may have only travelled the first five miles of a two-hundred-mile journey and we knew, from experience, that however we explained the
remaining length of the journey, the question from the back seat would be continued to be asked at regular intervals.
There would be an impatience in the
journey, a lack of understanding that the destination had to be travelled to, that
it would take time and commitment, to reach where we were going.
What preparations may we have made for that journey? I can remember as a child βhelpingβ my father to pack the car as he tried to use all the bootβs space to its full capacity.
There would be a journey to the petrol station to fill the car with petrol, check the oil and tyres and to buy the obligatory sweets. In that full boot there would be a container of water, just in case the radiator required
filling, along with his tool bag to make any simple repairs.
There was a preparedness for the journey and an expectation that to reach the destination it may not be easy travelling-that was the case within our household forty years ago.
Today, I do not carry a full toolkit or water to top up the radiator, but just expect that on each turn of the key (if there is one) the car will start. As a child, I remember that I grew to love the journey as well as the arrival.
The journey was not just to be tolerated, but could be explored, remembered and
gained from. It was in the planning of the route and having an idea of where we
were going, of doing our best in preparing the car and being ready for the
unexpected within the journey before us.
In our Christian journey is it just the destination which matters to us? Do we see
the benefit of the actual journey, of all we gain as we travel? Do we reflect in wonder at what we are seeing, what we are part of and how God is working in and through us?
Michael Card wrote there is a joy in the journey. As we continue in our journeys
with Christ may we be prepared, persevere within them, but also be open to the
movement of Godβs Spirit, giving space and freedom for the unexpected as we
travel.
With every blessing, Nick
