Today I facilitated a final rite for a close friend of mine, with her family gathered at her bedside. Her time is drawing nearer by the hour. I ask you to light a candle today for her and her family.
There is no "official" Pagan last rites, so the ceremony is written for each person individually, but along these lines..
We welcome the elements, ancestors and deities, calling the directions to cast a circle. This creates a sacred space with the family and the intended inside.
We do the "talking stick", so those gathered can say whatever they want to say. This was beautiful today. Very emotional and heartfelt.
We wish them peace, calm, joy and safe travels. Blessing each part of their physical vessel with an anointing of oil or water.
We call the ancestors forth and ask them to receive the intended, to guide them on their journey.
We remind them that wherever they go, we will all one day follow.
We acknowledge our love and grief, and send them forth knowing that they have blessed us just by being a part of our lives.
We close the circle, wishing farewell to the elements, deities and ancestors, and finally to the intended.
It was my deepest honour to do this today, and to see the love she has poured into her husband, her children and her family.
May the ancestors hold your hand and guide you.
Go well, go easy, and we will join you one day π
