The vote on assisted su***de is on 11 September. If you would like to voice your opposition to assisted su***de, there is still time - just collect a postcard (in the porch), fill out your details and post it to your MP.
Wednesday this week
Please note that there is a mandatory Clergy Safeguarding Day in York this Wednesday so I have had to move our Wednesday Mass to 6.30pm.
Why not come along to mass and then stay for episode 2 of The Chosen at 7pm?!
Bring your own drinks and nibbles (though we still have some red wine and prosecco left courtesy of the parish!) All welcome (you don’t have to have come to episode 1)

Safeguarding News: There are still a few forms (3, actually!) which haven’t been returned.

Baptisms
After our 10.30am Mass this weekend we have a double baptism of two cousins: Isabella Margot (daughter of Cherise and Tom) and Penelope Amy (daughter of Olivia and Sam).
Welcome to God’s family Bella and Nellie - and congratulations to both sets of proud parents.
Children's Liturgy
returns this Sunday. We look forward to welcoming everyone back. Just a reminder of our Safeguarding procedures: Children are welcome to Children's Liturgy, without parents - this session is led by our Children’s Liturgy leaders. However, for those parents with younger children who need to be present with their children, there is our informal “Little Liturgy”, where paper and felt tipped pens are available for parents to work with their child themselves. Thank you.
First Holy Communion 2026-2027
After each Mass I will be handing out the necessary safeguarding forms to any parents who wish to enrol their child onto our First Holy Communion Programme. Your child needs to be a baptised Catholic and either living in the parish or attending St Bernadette’s school. Cut-off date for returning the forms: next weekend.
RCIA - Exploring the Catholic Faith
A final call for any more people interested in exploring the Catholic faith in a series of very informal conversations? We have 4 people who have expressed an interest to date. There is no commitment needed - if you try this out and decide it’s not for you, no harm (and certainly no pressure!). If interested, contact Canon John this week.
Confirmation practice this Friday at 5pm
Newman Association Talk
This Wednesday (16th ) at 7pm . Speaker: Jonathan Tulloch “Our home is on fire... time to act” See poster.
8.30am Mass provision

SAFEGUARDING NEWS
In an effort to improve safeguarding awareness in the Catholic Church, the CSSA (Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency) has issued new guidance. As you know, anyone who has direct contact with others by way of exercising a ministry such as eucharistic minister taking Holy Communion to someone’s home, or a Children’s Liturgy leader, etc. needs to go through formal safeguarding procedures to get their “DBS” certificate. However, the CSSA has now issued guidance that anyone who volunteers in any capacity at all within the church needs to have at least some basic awareness of safeguarding procedures, even though you do not need to have a DBS.
To that end, I have printed off a leaflet which has been issued and am distributing it to all volunteers. It is in an envelope with your name on it in the porch. This covers all volunteers such as cleaners, readers, flower arrangers, those who minister Holy Communion only during Mass, etc. In other words, anyone at all who volunteers. Please take the leaflet home - read it - and then return the reply slip which is also in the envelope. You need to sign the slip simply to say that you have received and read the leaflet on safeguarding. That’s it.
If you think that you as a volunteer should have one of these leaflets and haven’t got one, please have a word with Canon John. Thank you. Safeguarding is the responsibility of all of us and this simple awareness raising exercise can only add to the confidence we have in our safeguarding procedures.

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO WALSINGHAM 2026
The 2026 Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham will now take place on Saturday, 26th September. We will join pilgrims from the Diocese of Leeds. I ask that you advertise this in your Parish newsletters, notice boards and on Parish websites/social media. There will be a bus picking up from Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Middlesbrough at 5:00 am and York Train Station at 6:00 am before heading to Walsingham. The cost will be £40 per person. For more information or to book onto this Pilgrimage, please contact my Secretary, Callum, at the Curial Office via email or telephone.

NATIONAL EUCHARISTIC ADOREMUS CONGRESS
The 2026 National Eucharistic Congress on 10th October 2026 is an invitation to renew our Eucharistic faith and love. There are two strands to the National Eucharistic Congress. In London, a representative gathering bishops, priests, and people will take part in public events including a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament. It is also anticipated that Adoremus will be celebrated in some way in our parishes. Footage from the London event will be made available to enable remote participation.

MARCH FOR LIFE 2026
Join March for Life UK on the first Saturday of September (5th) in London. The right to life underpins every other right we have and without it every other right is rendered meaningless. Abortion denies the most vulnerable in our society of their most basic right which is why this year's theme is “Abortion Hurts the Family.”
Unite with thousands of others at this family-friendly event where we recognise the value of life from conception and stand up for all those who have been impacted by abortion. Find out more at: https://www.marchforlife.co.uk/ or

ASSISTED SU***DE BILL
The MP for Rochester and Strood, Lauren Edwards, has announced that she intends to use her number two slot in the Private Members’ Bill ballot to bring back Kim Leadbeater’s assisted su***de Bill. It is important that all those who are opposed to the introduction of this legislation contact their local MP and ask that the Bill not be revived. As well as opposing the reintroduction of this Bill, it is important too to advocate support for the greater provision of palliative care.
