St. Joseph's R C Church, Middlesbrough Roman Catholic Church, Marton Road, Middlesbrough - part of the joint Parish of St. Joseph and St. Thomas More.

This page is facilitated by parishioner Ian Stubbs. A temporary tin chapel was erected in 1924-5 to serve the growing population as the town spread southwards. It was replaced on the same site by a permanent church in 1933-4. "An Italian Romanesque church built in 1933-4 from designs by Bishop Thomas Shine which is a landmark on the Marton Road. In the 1920s the suburbs of Middlesbrough were expanding southwards and there was a need to provide for Catholics in the Acklam area. A temporary tin church was erected in 1925 along with a school (architect Thomas Rodgers of Darlington) in 1927. On 18 February 1933 The Tablet reported: ‘His lordship the Bishop has designed the plan for a new church, which it is hope to begin building shortly. The growth of the Catholic population in this part of Middlesbrough has been rapid and extensive; and looking ahead, his lordship is arranging for a church to sit about six hundred worshippers instead of the two hundred and fifty accommodated in the present building. A feature of the new St Joseph’s will be a tower rising to a height of ninety feet, flanked on the other side of the western front by a shorter tower terminating about the level of the gable. The main entrance, facing Marton Road, will be under a portico upheld by stone columns. Generally, the building will be in the Norman style, and its cost is estimated at £7,000’. The builder was Frank Spink of Bridlington, who also built St Francis of Assisi, Acklam. Pope Leo XIV's doctors announced on Saturday morning that Pope Leo XIV is fit to be discharged from Gemelli Hospital.

In a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said the Pope underwent blood tests and a chest X-ray in the morning, which confirm that his clinical condition allows for him to leave hospital.

The Holy See Press Office said he will return to the Vatican on Saturday afternoon and pray the Angelus on Sunday from the window of the papal apartment.

Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora have provided the following update on the Pope’s postoperative recovery:

This morning, the Holy Father underwent the blood tests and chest X-ray scheduled after surgery. The results confirm that his postoperative recovery is progressing normally: the values are within the expected range for the type of operation performed.

The Holy Father has undergone respiratory physiotherapy and has begun walking around his room. He has resumed eating normally and had breakfast and lunch.

His recovery is proceeding as expected.
