On 6 September 1917, Hedd Wyn was announced as the winner of the Chair at the National Eisteddfod in Birkenhead, with his poem "Yr Arwr" (The Hero).

But the shepherd and poet from Trawsfynydd was not there to receive it, having been killed on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele in World War One just weeks earlier, aged 30.

The empty chair was covered with a black cloth and became known as "the Black Chair" as it was taken back to his family home in Gwynedd.

The chair remains there today as a powerful symbol of the poet and the generation lost in the war.
