9.30am lasting about half an hour

We're trying out a variety of liturgies, alternating between Morning Prayer from the Scottish Episcopal Church, Northumbria Community (Celtic Daily Prayer) and Iona Community. We are always happy to welcome anyone who would like to join us. New ideas for other formats of prayer we can use would also be great.

EARTHQUAKE HELP AND WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

EARTHQUAKE HELP
All of us will be aware of the tragedy following the earthquake in Syria and Turkey. I am sure we are all praying for those victims and their familes and friends. The most effective way to contribute to the help which is so desperately needed appears to be via the Disasters Emergency Committee, which is a joint venture on behalf of the fifteen larger UK Charities including Christian Aid, Cafod, Red Cross, Oxfam and others, to combine resources.

You can donate to the earthquake fund here:

You can find out more about the Disasters Emergency Committee here: https://www.dec.org.uk/who-we-are

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
After the disruptions of covid, our traditional ecumenical celebration of this service this will be at 2.30pm on Friday 3rd March this year at St. Cuthbert’s on High Cross Avenue. St Cuthbert’s is happy to relight the WDP candle, passed on to them from The Parish Church at the end of the 2020 service, and congregations from all our Melrose churches are invited to celebrate the service.

It's the Christian women of Taiwan who've written this year's service with the theme 'I have heard about your faith' (Ephesians).

HOLY TRINITY WEDNESDAY MONTHLY EUCHARIST, LENT AND HOLY WEEK

MONTHLY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON EUCHARIST
Our monthly Wednesday afternoon Eucharist will be held this week in the Trinity Centre at 2.30pm. The service will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to have a chat.

LENT AND HOLY WEEK AT HOLY TRINITY MELROSE
For our Lent course this year, we will be exploring our central act of worship – the Eucharist. Over the five weeks in Lent, we will take a trip from the earliest biblical sources of the Eucharist, to our own modern liturgies, exploring the changes and the historical contexts in which these changes were made.

The course will be delivered by a weekly video on the YouTube Channel and discussions will follow. The first video is there now at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8LqkJlqBxM.

So that the online community may be involved, we will have two opportunities for taking part in our discussions on these videos – one will be in the Trinity Centre, after the usual Wednesday morning Eucharists, and the other a Zoom meeting online on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. We sincerely hope that you will be able to be a part of one of these groups, and that you will enjoy the videos.

POEM OF THE WEEK
(From) Ash Wednesday by T. S. Eliot
This is the time of tension between dying and birth
The place of solitude where three dreams cross
Between blue rocks
But when the voices shaken from the yew-tree drift away
Let the other yew be shaken and reply.

Blessèd sister, holy mother, spirit of the fountain, spirit
of the garden,
Suffer us not to mock ourselves with falsehood
Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still
Even among these rocks,
Our peace in His will
And even among these rocks
Sister, mother
And spirit of the river, spirit of the sea,
Suffer me not to be separated

And let my cry come unto Thee.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND BLISTER PACKS

Let’s talk about climate change – Feb 2023 - “Put your money where your heart is”
LET'S TALK ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE - FEB 2023 - "PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR HEART IS"
The EcoCongregation topic for this month asks us to think about the wider impacts of our day-to-day purchases, food, clothing, household items and so on. We meet after the morning service on the last Sunday of the month in Joan’s Room in the Trinity Centre with our coffees; join us this Sunday, 26th February.

A GLIMMER OF LIGHT RE BLISTER PACKS
“We are working with the other UK administrations to introduce extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging. Packaging EPR will obligate producers to fund efficient and effective local authority collection services for household packaging waste, including blister packs. This is less straightforward for blister packs, which are not easy to recycle due to strict regulatory requirements set by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.” (This is a much-condensed reply to HTM's Eco-Cong Rep's enquiry of his MP about blister packs.)

BISHOP'S LENT APPEAL 2023

In the Scottish Episcopal Church we believe it is a priority to provide high-quality training to form the next generation of church leaders. We recognize how important it is to resource our Scottish Episcopal Institute and we are proud of its success. At the Lambeth Conference last year, I discovered that this is a priority shared right across the Anglican Communion, but many Provinces struggle to find a consistent funding stream for their Seminaries and Theological Colleges.

My appeal this Lent is in support of St Nicholas’ Seminary in Cape Coast, Ghana. Cape Coast is our partner diocese and I had the great joy of visiting the Seminary when I attended Bishop Victor’s enthronement 10 years ago. The Dean of the Seminary, Joseph Bain-Doodu, was in the UK last year so I learned first-hand of his struggle to provide excellent training with limited and erratic funding sources. This water filtration project seems to me to be a wonderful example of self-help. I commend it to you and ask for your generous support. I know that the cost-of-living crisis is hitting many of us hard just now, but I hope, nevertheless, that by pooling our generosity we may help to sustain the life of a church, far away in geographical terms, but close to us within the life of Christ.

As Joseph explains, a comparatively small amount of money (for us) can make a big difference for the ongoing life of the church in West Africa.
+John
