St Giles Church Matlock Saint Giles is the ancient parish church of Matlock. Come to Sung Eucharist 9.30am Sunday, children's craft area and coffee afterwards.

Thank you to everyone who came together to make Environment Week and the Thanksgiving Picnic such a success. On Saturday, you hung two bat boxes, feeders and ten bird boxes in the perfect locations, looked for ideal spots for the two new hedgehog homes, checked in on the new bug hotel for new residents and walked the boundaries with Rev'd Katrina as she asked for God's blessing on them all. We now watch for nature's guests to arrive. Do let us know if you spot any arrivals!

IT'S TODAY!!: Come to a Thanksgiving Picnic, Siting of Bird and Bat boxes and Thanksgiving Walk TODAY (Saturday 13th) at 3pm – 5pm .

Picnic: Bring a seat, food, sunscreen and/or parasol and spend some time just sitting with friends and soaking in the wonder of the churchyard. Drinks will be available in church. (If the weather is inclement, we will picnic inside before making our Thanksgiving Walk). You could have a go at the ‘Treasure Hunt‘ or lend a hand putting the bird and bat boxes in place.

Thanksgiving Walk and Blessing of the Work: around 4.30pm we will process around the site led by Rev’d Katrina to give thanks for our churchyard and its wildlife and to ask God’s blessing on our efforts to help the fauna and flora flourish.

Please come and join in – even if it’s raining!

Thank you to everyone who helped to litter pick in the churchyard on Monday of Environment Week and helped to start the construction of our magnificent Bug Hotel.

By Wednesday it was ready to be furnished and was declared OPEN for Bug Guests.
What do you think?

Our 'What Can You Spot?' quiz was a great success and the two brilliant winners were of course from St Giles CE Primary and Nursery. Who knew there was such a wide variety of plants and insects in the churchyard!

It's not too late to come for a look around at the Thanksgiving Picnic and Blessing on Saturday 13th at 3pm-5pm. Try the quiz yourself, you will be very welcome.

IT'S TODAY!!: As part of Environment Week, come to try the 'What Can You Spot in the churchyard' Quiz and help furnish the Bug Hotel, TODAY (Wednesday 10th) at 3.30pm – 5pm.

What Can You Spot? Pick up a sheet and follow the instructions to find the answers to the questions. You never know there might be a prize!

Furnishing the Bug Hotel: We need to put material into the gaps of the pallet to provide things for the wildlife to use:
- Dead wood and loose bark for creepy crawlies like beetles, centipedes, spiders and woodlice
- Holes and small tubes (not plastic) for solitary bees made out of bamboo, reeds and drilled logs
- Larger holes with stones and tiles, which provide the cool, damp conditions frogs and toads like – if these go in the centre they give a frost-free place for the winter)
- Dry leaves, sticks or straw for ladybirds (they eat aphids) and other beetles and bugs
- Corrugated cardboard for Lacewings (their larvae eat aphids, too)

If you can bring any of these materials along (either on Monday or Wednesday) that would be great – or you could help look around and see what we can collect from the churchyard.

ITS TODAY!!: Come to Litter Pick and for Phase 1 Build of the Bug-Hotel TODAY (Monday 8th) at 6pm – 7.30pm, to do something for Environment Week.

Litter is not a huge problem in Saint Giles churchyard, but it is amazing what you see once you start looking. Here is a chance to have a wander around, help tidy up and also start looking out for the different wildlife that is in the churchyard.

Please wear sensible footwear as the ground is uneven and steep in places. We can provide litter pickers, rubbish sacks and disposable gloves but please bring your own protective gloves if you have them. Please come to the church entrance to pick up sacks etc. and so that we know who is taking part.

We've had a kind donation of wooden pallets that we plan to use to create a bug hotel. Phase 1 will involve putting the pallets in the right place, making sure they are stable and have gaps for “interior design” and providing some kind of roof. A name plate would also be good. If you want to help with this it would be good to bring some heavy-duty gloves. We plan to furnish it at the Wednesday event. See website for more details if you would like to come along.
