⛪ What a morning at Vale Community Church!
We continued our series on the life of King David with “The Making of a King” — how David’s relationship with God was forged in the caves, not in a palace. Dan asked a question that hit home: are some of us getting better with ChatGPT than with “Chat Eternity”? When we go to Google before we go to God, something’s the wrong way round. God doesn’t want to be treated like a Satnav — He wants a relationship with us. David went against all conventional human wisdom by enquiring of God first, rather than asking Him to bless plans he’d already made.

We prayed for our young people returning to school this week. Maureen led us in a time of prayer, Heather brought the reading from 1 Samuel 23:1-14, Dave and Ann prepared and served communion, Chris was a rock on the tech as usual, and Annie and Amaya led a bustling KidZone.
Great to have so many families back from their holidays — and what a joy to be part of a church with a 90-year age range, all worshipping together. The best is yet to come! 🙌

Prayer Stall — Heart of Marston Fun Day
What a joy to be part of the Heart of Marston Fun Day yesterday! ☀️
Our prayer door stall was buzzing all afternoon — toddlers, teenagers, mums, dads and grandparents all picking up a pen, painting a wooden prayer door and thinking about what it means to ask God.
“Ask and it will be given to you.” (Matthew 7:7)
Every door was different — rainbows, toadstools, butterflies, hearts and some truly glorious toddler scribbles. And every one went home as a little reminder that God listens, and that His door is always open.
No experience needed. No pressure. Everyone welcome.
Huge thanks to The Heart of Marston for putting on such a brilliant day for our village, and to everyone who stopped by for a paint and a chat. This is what community looks like — and the best is yet to come. 🎨🚪

We all have them.

The thing that stands in the valley shouting at us every morning — the diagnosis, the debt, the relationship that’s gone quiet, the fear you’ve never said out loud to anyone.

On Sunday we were in 1 Samuel 17, and Dan asked us to do something uncomfortable: name our giants. Not just the obvious one, but to have the courage to see the giant behind the giant.
Here’s the bit that stuck with us — fear is natural. Israel had every reason to be afraid; the Philistines had bronze and iron and they had none of it. Scripture doesn’t pretend fear isn’t real. But it does have something to say about what we do with it.

Reading 1 Samuel 15:1–23 can stop you in your tracks. Some of it offends our 21st-century sensibilities, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. But if we read the Bible badly, we end up with two Gods — one we tolerate and one we like.

Dan’s answer is simple and steady: the God we’re talking about is the same God yesterday, today and forevermore.

If this is a question you’ve carried for a while, come and ask it out loud. You’ll find no raised eyebrows here. Belong before believing.

When we first moved to Albania, I’d stand in our doorway and shout down the street at the kids playing football, warning them about oncoming cars. Very responsible. Very fatherly.

Except the Albanian word I was confidently bellowing up and down the road, twice a day, for two months, was not the word for “car.” I’ll leave it there.

Same sounds. Very different meaning.

That’s where we’re starting this morning at Vale Community Church — because we do the same thing with the Bible, and with each other. We’re looking at how to read it properly, and why getting it wrong changes how you live.

10:30am at Forest End School. Come as you are. Kids welcome — we start all together. Coffee and a chat afterwards.

Belong before believing. See you at 10:30 🙌
