We continue our journey through Lent and have now reached the sixth Sunday, which speaks to us about the miracle of healing the man born blind, as told in the Gospel of John, chapter 9.
The Gospels of the Sundays in Lent speak to us about repentance, which is the main goal of this season. Just like the return of the prodigal son and the repentance of the Samaritan woman, we find that both last Sunday and this Sunday feature healing miracles that symbolize healing from sin. Last Sunday, we heard about the paralytic who was healed by Jesus after 38 years. The cause of his paralysis was his sin, which is why Jesus told him, โDo not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.โ The man got up and carried his bed, symbolizing that the sinner can rise from sin and regain strength.
Today, we reflect on another healing story: a man born blind to whom Jesus granted sight. This man courageously testified to Jesus before the scribes and Pharisees, even though they expelled him from the synagogue. They said to him, โYou donโt know that the one who healed you is a sinner,โ but he replied, โHow can a sinner open the eyes of a man born blind? We have never heard from the beginning that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.โ
After they expelled him, Jesus found him, and the man believed in Him and followed Him. This story shows us that those who are unjustly cast out can be visited by God and receive His grace. As David said, โLet me fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercy is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.โ
From this miracle, we learn three key lessons:
๐ญ โ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐ฉ๐:
The blind man listened to Jesus and obeyed. When Jesus made mud, placed it on his eyes, and told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam, he did not question or argueโdespite the strangeness of the situation. He simply obeyed. His obedience and faith are the first virtues we notice. This reminds us how important it is to trust and follow Godโs instructions, even when they donโt make sense.

After being healed, the man boldly testified to Jesusโ power, even in the face of opposition. When the Pharisees accused Jesus of being a sinner for breaking the Sabbath, the man replied, โIn truth, I know only one thing: I was blind, and now I see. And God does not listen to sinners.โ His courage is a powerful example of how believers should stand firm and share their faith, even when others doubt or challenge them.

๐๐จ๐ช๐จ:
How did the man born blind know that the one speaking to him was Jesus, the one who had healed him? It was the first time he had ever seen Jesus. He recognized Him by His voice. He remembered that it was Jesus who had told him to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam, and after doing so, he came back seeing. The man recognized Jesus not by physical appearance, but by His voice and His actions. This teaches us that true understanding of Jesus comes through faith and spiritual insight, not just physical sight.
Lord, help me to obey You.
Give me the courage and strength to stand up for my faith.
Help me to hear and recognize Your voice.
Glory to God forever. Amen.
