Encountering Grace: Reflections on John 4:2-44
By E G. Wilson
As I sit here by the well, the memories flood back to me, transporting me to that moment when my life changed. The quiet solitude of the day, the sound of water, it all feels so familiar now. I remember coming here, just like any other day, to draw water. But little did I know that this ordinary task would lead to an extraordinary encounter.
I approached the well, unaware of the divine appointment that awaited me. And then, there He was—Yeshua, The Messiah, sitting by the well, waiting for me. His presence radiated warmth and compassion, piercing through the layers of my guarded heart.
”He told me all that ever I did." His words echoed deep within, unlocking the depths of my soul with their raw honesty. In His presence, there was no more need to hide, no need to mask the brokenness within. He saw me, not just the surface, but the depths of my being, and yet He loved me still, embracing me with arms of compassion despite the shameful, secret sinful story that I carried.
In our conversation, His words cut through the weight of shame and guilt that had burdened me for so long. He knew my past, my mistakes, my failures, yet He offered me something I had never known—forgiveness, redemption, and grace.
Reflecting on that encounter, I am humbled by the depth of Christ’s love. His knowledge of me didn't condemn me but set me free from the chains of my past. He saw beyond my failures, beyond my flaws, beyond my brokenness, and saw the potential for transformation within me.
Even as I confessed the truth of my five past sexual encounters, expecting judgment and condemnation, His love remained steadfast. He offered me a new beginning, a fresh start, drenched in His mercy and understanding. In His presence, I found the courage to face my truth, and receive the healing only He could offer. I experienced a love that knows no bounds, reaching into the darkest corners of my soul and whispering "You are seen, you are known, you are loved, and you are forgiven.”
Today, as I journey through life, I cling to God’s Word. It is the most-read book in the world and a significant piece of literature that reminds me of the depth of God’s love, the power of His grace, and the beauty of redemption. May I, in turn, reflect His love to others, extending grace just as it was freely given to me.
And as I walk this path of newfound freedom, I cling to His promise found in John 4:13-14 "Jesus Christ said. . . Whosoever drinketh of the water [of Jacob] shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him [and her] shall . . .spring up into everlasting life." Christ's words are not just a wellspring of hope; they are the very foundation of my existence, assuring me that His love and grace will sustain me through every desire, temptation, and trial, guiding me towards everlasting life.
