From Fr. James:
As many of you will know by now, our dear friend
Oliver Foreman sadly died on Sunday morning.
Oliver was a familiar and much-loved member of St Mark's for many
years and had a particular concern for youth work; certainly, his
work with the Sunday Youth Service so regularly throughout the year
and at Christmas will live long in people's memories. He also
oversaw much of the publicity material for our church for many years,
including typing and printing liturgies for our services. Until increased
problems with mobility made this more difficult, Oliver was a faithful worshipper at St Mark's
not only on Sundays but also arranging and leading Evening Prayer on Monday evenings,
where a small group would gather together to praise God through readings, prayers and
psalms.
The details of Oliver's funeral service have yet to be arranged, but it will take place at St
Mark's and will be conducted by Oliver's brother, Fr. Tim Foreman.
Our love, thoughts, and prayers are with David, Tammy and Katrine at this sad time.
Rest in peace, Oliver, we shall miss you very much.

Prayer for the Week – 3rd Sunday of Lent – Luke 13: 1-9
Merciful God, you call us to repentance, not in fear, but in love. Like the barren fig tree, we are given time to grow—help us to use this season well. Show us the areas of our lives that need transformation and give us the grace to bear good fruits filled with love. Just as You heard the cries of Your people, hear us now as we seek freedom from sin. Open our hearts to Your call and lead us to new life in You. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Compassionate God,
we recognise that our world is a broken place,
hurt by poverty, famine and disease.
We admit that sometimes we make the world a broken place,
tolerating prejudice, conflict and self-interest.
We confess that our hearts also suffer with anger,
resentment and jealousy.

Renew us in Your love, O God,
and heal us with the comfort of Your abundant love.
Awaken us to the role we can play in healing Your creation.
Strengthen us through the power of the Holy Spirit
to hear Your word and move forward in faith. Amen.

Prayer for the Week - 4th Sunday before Lent
Jesus, we hear your challenge to Peter:
“Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
The challenges around us can feel like deep waters,
stormy seas which cause us fear and despair.

We hear Peter’s response of faith to Jesus:
“because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
Help us to respond to you with that obedience,
in our uncertainty give us the strength to trust you.

When Peter sees the huge catch, he has a revelation:
“Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
Remind us of our own weakness and failures,
give us humility and awe in the face of your glory.

Help us hear Jesus’ encouragement to Peter:
“Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
May our repentance turn to joy and our fear to trust,
send us out in your power to live and work for you.
(Sam Hargreaves, from engageworship).

Prayer for the Week – Candlemas

The Mother brings her Candle
To the Temple of Desire,
In wax of flesh and weakness
But soul-wick full of fire!
A light to pierce the darkness,
Redemption for our race,
The gift of expiation
Before our Father's face!
A flame of contradiction
To tyrant, Gentile, Jew,
But holocaust for ages,
Each dawn will see anew!
O take your Candle, Mary,
Too soon you'll suffer loss
In Love's great conflagration
On the altar of the Cross!

Prayer for the Week - Christmas Day

Not gold, nor myrrh, nor even frankincense
would I have for you this season,
but simple gifts, the ones that are hardest to find,
the ones that are perfect,
even for those who have everything (if such there be).

I would (if I could)
have for you the gift of courage,
the strength to face the gauntlets
only you can name,
and the firmness in your heart to know
that you (yes, you!) can be a bearer of the quiet dignity
that is the human glorified.

I would (if by my intention I could make it happen)
have for you the gift of connection,
the sense of standing on the hinge of time,
touching past and future
standing with certainty that you (yes, you!)
are the point where it all comes together.

I would (if wishing could make it so)
have for you the gift of community,
a nucleus of love and challenge,
to convince you in your soul
that you (yes, you!) are a source of light
in a world too long believing in the dark.

Not gold, nor myrrh, nor even frankincense,
would I have for you this season,
but simple gifts, the ones that are hardest to find,
the ones that are perfect,
even for those who have everything (if such there be).
