Hollingworth Methodist Church

Hollingworth Methodist Church Hollingworth Methodist Church Hollingworth Methodist Church is in the centre of the village on the main road in the village of Hollingworth.

We are a lively, friendly church, with a warm welcoming informal atmosphere. Worship is central to the life of our church and we aim to have a good mixture of old and new styles of worship as well as a great variety of different kinds of services. We have a wide range of midweek activities - ranging from working with children and young people, bible studies as well as coffee mornings, lunchtime me

etings, and midweek services. Our building is flexible and open and is used by different organisations in the community. An important part of our life is our involvement with different charities..such as Christian Aid. We have an active link with a church and project in South India. We often have other events and activities planned - drama, music, social events as well as plenty of fairs and lunches with good home made food. We have links and work well with other churches in the area. At Hollingworth we seek to be open and inclusive, we seek to be very accepting, believing that each person is unique and loved by God for who they are.

Lock Down Tiers
Things may well have changed by the time you read this.
Liverpool has gone into the highest 3 rd tier for restrictions and we wait to see if that is extended to other places. There is a deepening sense that we are going to have live with more lock down rules curbs these next few weeks and months. There are divided opinions as to what is the best way to go forward. On the morning Liverpool went into the very high category, author from Liverpool Frank Catterall Boyce gave some reflection about how Liverpool will cope and get through. He spoke of Liverpool as a great centre for the arts, music, trade and even football. He talked about how the people of Liverpool will have to draw on deep resilience as they have done in the past. He went on to say that in the
midst of upheaval and difficulty “crisis often produces change” – it can be a time of realisation, to focus on the things that in then end really matter and mean the most.
We think and pray for the people of Liverpool and for ourselves and local communities as we face these continued times of lock down restrictions.
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Prayer
We pray for one another during these times. We pray that we may look to what is lasting and sure and find our hope and strength in that. We remember those for whom these days are troubled. God’s peace to be with all. Amen.

Oberammergau
I was interested to read the origins of the Oberammergau
Passion Play. During the 30-year war (1618 - 1648 the bubonic plague swept across Europe. It arrived in erammergau from a workman, within 33 days 84 people had died. The villagers vowed that if they were spared further deaths, they would perform in perpetuity a play based on the last days of Jesus’ life.
The first play was performed in 1634. Now the theatre holds 4,700 people and the play is performed every ten years. Each year half a million people will stay in the village to see the play which last five hours. The Passion Play is significant because it reminds us where our hope in the end lies.
This year the play had to be cancelled but is hoped to be rescheduled for two years’ time.
We give think for the inspiration which led to the play first being performed and hope something of that spirit can be part of our lives during this Covid time.
Romans 6:8
Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
Prayer
Loving God help us to draw strength from those in past who have been through difficult times and show have shown resilience and inspiration. Amen

Bright Sunshine
It was good to have bright sunshine one morning – although it
was raining by lunchtime. The light flooded in through the
windows and everything felt bright and warm. Outside the trees and the grass on the green in front of me looked stunning and everything felt good.
I settled down to work but soon got distracted... things I hadn’t
noticed before were being revealed because of the sun: streaks on the window, extra dust on the floor, marks on the table and bits under the cooker. And I thought everything was spotless and clean!
When the light shines it reveals things that are hidden away and can otherwise be forgotten about.
We can think about our own lives, when the light of God shines into our hearts what are the things that may be revealed that which we were thought were well hidden in the darkness. We need not be afraid of the dark, the light is there to help and give us strength to make our lives better.
I soon got an extra cloth and sweeping brush and was able to put things right.
John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Prayer
Loving God may your light shine into my life and reveal those things in the dark place of my life and may your light dispel them. Amen

Rosehill Methodist Primary Academy
Most people are aware that Rosehill Primary Methodist
Academy is part of the circuit, and Revd Rob Balfour is chaplain to the school. At the circuit meeting Rob presented 3
suggestions as to how the circuit can support the school during these days:
1. Each church to be asked to raise money (roughly
£100) to go towards extra supplies for when pupils have
to be home schooled.
2. There are 16 classes and 16 churches so the idea is to
have each class to twin with one of the churches, and
have some correspondence.
3. To write to the MP and secretary of state education
urging greater support for schools.
Also we were encouraged to pray for the school as they greatly support of the circuit.
More information about this will be sent out in the near future but let pray for Rosehill, the pupils
and staff and for other schools in our area.
Isaiah 54:13
All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.
Prayer
We pray for all the staff and pupils at Rosehill Methodist Academy and other schools. We give thanks
for all the work and commitment to provide education and keep everyone safe. Amen

Cold Morning
There has been a noticeable change in the temperature. Some mornings have had a colder feel, mist and frost and a sense of the winter months ahead. On bright sunny days this is uplifting, there is a sense of beauty, a bit of the ‘wow’ factor. Many of us are fortunate, we can dig out the winter jumpers and fleece and put the heating on, but for some the coming of colder months may be a worry, especially if people have got to stay more at home. Some may have severe financial worries and others will be facing this time as homeless. Many of the night shelters were closed at the beginning of the COVID lockdown, due to not being able to social distance. There has been a move to reopen the night shelters but this has been criticised by charities such as Shelter who warn that the funding is not enough. Councils will receive some extra money as will and Faith and community groups who are involved in running night shelters.
As we enjoy the winter cold we think of those for whom these will be worrying times and for some, times of suffering and hardship. We remember the ways we can help and support the much-needed work.
Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
Prayer
“When I needed a neighbour were you there were you there...when I needed a neighbour were you
there.” Lord, help me to be there. Amen.

Flat Battery
After an early morning swim, I returned to my car to find it
wouldn’t start. Mild panic set in... Would I make it back for the
first Zoom meeting of the day? Suddenly the day seemed out of my control as I wondered what would happen. Luckily on that morning things turned out well. The breakdown service arrived speedily and decided I needed a new battery there and then and so replaced it and I was home within the hour. I felt very grateful, and was so glad that things went so smoothly. Also the person who came was so helpful, and cheery. I thought about how good I might be at ‘patiently waiting’ which in this case wasn’t too long. But there was also a deep sense of how dependent our lives are on other people with different skills than what we have. We all need each other in different ways. The battery had run its life and was on
empty and maybe there is something for our spiritual lives: we can’t run on empty. How we do recognise when we are close to that point and what are the things that can refuel us and renew us.
The flat battery of my car made me think how I can’t run my life on a flat battery.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they
will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Prayer
Loving God thank you for those who come to me and help me when I need help, help me to be there
for others. Help me to recognise those times when my spiritual battery is flat – I turn to you for you
are my strength and renewer. Amen.
